Well after doing the final tally count on 2013 I figured out that I passed the 600 games in a season mark. Called 623 games this past year. Most I had done in a season before that was last year when I did 586 games. Gotta love Texas weather where we can call all year around.

Dang, I wish there was that much baseball year round up here in KS. Mid-March to what little left is played in October. I have yet to tally for some reason, and to be honest, I don't even have a ballpark number to guesstimate.

Same to you guys also, one month away!

No, no one has "work to do" ...... the number of games you do per season is not a barometer of you as an umpire ..... and it doesn't necessarily make you better.  Now, I'm not slamming people who can do a TON of games because you live in TX or So Cal, etc....but "game count" isn't the end-all be-all ..........

Wow how is that even possible?

I worked about 300 this year and I work almost everyday and tournaments on weekends.

I have to ask how that is possible also?

After this coming weekend I will reach 294 for the year.

I have been close to 300 per year for the last 4 years and I work full time umpiring.

Between March and August I have gone over a month without a night or day off and still could never see being able to work that many in any year.

I am sorry but just can't see how that is possible time wise, physically or mentally.

Game count is important if you are making your living as a Professional Umpire, umpiring Amateur Baseball.

More games equals more money.

Doesn't necessarily make you a better umpire but sure the heck means you are a Good Umpire since numerous Assignors and others keep calling and assigning you games.

So game count equals food on my table and money in my pocket.

Being a Better Umpire is relevant to your goals as a umpire.

I don't need nor do I desire to work any higher levels then I work.

With my game count and the demand for me to work by Assignors, I don't need to get any better.  :meditation:

I call BS   i dont really see how this is possible I called nearly every weekend you did and I know you took several weekends off or were TD for the weekend and didnt call much. Plus we had pretty much all of August off at TCA.    I only did 345 games I can see if maybe you did 450 or maybe even 500 but I cant see how you did 623 games.

Calling games every week night plus AAYBA helped get my game count back up. That was two weeks straight of 6-7 games a day for 6 days both weeks. That was 77 games alone in just a 2 week span. I also had 43 high school games not including summer ball or MIckey Mantel. Most of the games I got were in the spring when I wasn't doing much TD work. I was calling 8 games on saturday and 7-8 on Sunday every weekend. Trey did even more than I did. He got close to the 800 mark.

You must be Superman.

6-7 games a day would be like 14 hours a day for 2 weeks???????

I don't think I have ever meet someone that can work a schedule like that and provide quality umpiring.

Must be nice to be so young.

Hope you have a good investment adviser to help make all that money your making work for you.  :notworthy:

I guess there is a new term to use instead of Game Whore.

well, congrats, I guess...

This is no knock on you, but.my experiences and my concerns are as to someone who does 6-7 games a day, is how many of those games were done well.... I would be leery of even the youngest, most fit umpires trying to do that many games up to the standard our association hopes to provide......we even decide who to assign our best baseball DH's to, so that we can assure we get best umpires and  best efforts coordinated....

I do admire umpires like Semper Fi who are doing this as a vocation and if that's your goal, well good for you.

I live in an area where baseball is a march to august, then sept -oct if lucky.......I average 85-90 games a year....I have done well over a hundred a few good years when the weather co-operated....Im sure if I was in an area where the amount of baseball was unlimited, that with my numbers might double...but I am looking to do only better baseball not MORE baseball....................but as to these reported numbers? ........color me skeptical....

I have to agree with the quality of umpiring comment. There is no way that the quality of the umpiring doesn't suffer when you are absolutely worn out after working those 6 games in a day. Certainly doesn't help the kids.

Lou, I thought the bold spelled out my point pretty clearly ....so obviously there are some situations that make game count vital, such as yours, which is usually the exeption and not the norm.

And remember, .... your game count, and your assignors demanding you to work also doesn't mean you can't get better, or shouldn't strive to be a better umpire.  It has nothing to do with desiring to work higher levels.   You can have a 1000 games per year, and have assignors calling you at all hours of the night ....but that doesn't mean you're not mediocre .... and I'm not calling you mediocre either, so don't take that the wrong way ... it's a general statement in relation to what we're discussing....

Trust me I'm paying taxes on it. I always love that time of year when 1099s come in.

It's my full time job I have to do that many games to get by. Trust me I'm not making that much money at all when you consider it's not a secondary job for a little side cash. The two weeks of baseball all day had a week off in between. I can assure you that the quality of umpiring doesn't suffer because of the number of games I do. I actually think I could probably squeeze in another game or 2 on those long days before I started to suffer from it.

I guess that's where I have a problem with that approach...........your statement is that you could do more games before you start to suffer..........and I am assuring you that whether you believe it or not, it would be impossible for the quality of that many games to remain high if umpired by the same man.....

I also have to agree.

You can not seriously say the quality of your umpiring is the same in game six as game one.

I do not believe you could even be your best quality on and day after that.

I have been there and done that and have worked with others who done it.

Your performance starts to degrade after the 2nd game on the first day.

What I find remarkable is the fact you got through that many games with out a good injury.

The next time I visit a Emergency Room or Urgent Care, the wife will be posting my gear for sale on here.

I have been lucky this year with no visits.

Last injury was Oct 2011.
