That didn't sound modest, I'm sorry.

I am currently a Little League umpire and and working to become the first female umpire to work a Major League game. (Or two. Or three. Or hundred.) I've been given a lot of sideway glances for saying this, but my favorite umpires right now are Manny Gonzalez and Tony Randazzo. In fact, I've just been given a sideways glances, period. But I hope to attend Wendelstedt when I get out of school and get a profession in Major League Baseball.

Also I've had this ongoing debate with my math teacher, is algebra actually needed for higher league umpiring than Little League?

Welcome to the forum and to umpiring!  I have had the pleasure of working with some very good female umpires during my career, and I encourage you to follow your dreams.

 

And, as of 5:21 am, PDT I have not used algebra yet today.

This morning I know its been 3 days since having Cocoa Puffs for breakfast, 2 days since Lucky Charms, 1 days since Smurf Berry Crunch. If I like CP 2 times as much as LC and 3 times more than SBC, what do I have for breakfast today?  

 

Kidding aside. its not whether or not you use algebra in your everyday life its whether you can use the basic problem solving skills that you learn/practice in algebra. Also doing your algebra homework everyday instills disciplinary skills that every successful umpire/person needs.

Welcome. And good luck following your dream to be a big league umpire! What Ricka said is true. Algebra isn't only about algebra. Problem solving, rational thinking, Following rules and procedures to get to a desired result. All qualities you'll need not only as an umpire but in any path the future takes you. I happen to use math/algebra in my job every day, and if you would have asked me in high school if I thought I'd ever use it, the answer would have been "no way". You'd be amazed at how many professions use it, and, not take this the wrong way, but you never know what profession you'll end up in. learn it and practice it. It'll make you better at everything.

Umpiring, no, you won't use algebra. As others have said, the process is the important part. Also, either school and any umpire that has been through the system, including guys that made it to MLB, will tell you to  have a backup to umpiring. I know some very good umpires that were released simply because there was no movement. I was a home builder for many years, plus I am in the concert business. I used geometry, algebra and trig daily. I married my wife of 27 yrs because she called me to tutor her in Calculus, we had dated in school, ended up getting married. So math is very important in life. Also if you play music it is all based on math.

To umpire you need to understand geometry. It's all about the angles.

Welcome aboard Rulekeep!  A friend of mine has the same goals as you and is on the the threshold of becoming an SEC umpire. Hang in there and don't give up! I hated HS and college algebra and didn't think I needed it, and who new I would need it practically daily at work.  So hang in there and give it your best effort and get a good grade. How you respond in tough situations reveals more character than easy situations do. So start young and build a good foundation of high standards and a strong desire to succeed.

I don't know about needing Algebra but you sure as heck will need to understand Geometry! It's all about angles! Welcome aboard.
