Wow, that was a loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong argument.

Why did the crew let it go on so long?  Anyone know any other details?

I have never seen any other argument, certainly no argument recently, that lasted so long --- nearly 30 minutes.  Is it possible this event caused a rethinking of game management procedures?

Wow, that was a mess. I know I never followed the national league but I had no idea that ever happened. The funny thing was the announcers were incensed that the PU would overrule the calling umpire, including that if he wanted to make a new umpire look bad, he did. Today it would been the opposite.

Wasn't there a discussion some weeks back about base umpires wearing "plate coats?"

Back then, there were actually base coats as well as plate coats. They were cut differently than the plate coats which allowed room for the chest protector and balls in the pockets. MLB's did not wear plate coats on the bases.

Go ask Runge, Marsh, Engel, and Ripley. They would remember all about it. This was his (Rippley) other 1984 ejection in his first Full Time year. The other 18 came in the Braves/Padres fight that year.
