HBP here. Leyland comes out and argues and Barry gets the crew together. The announcers get two good angles showing the ball bouncing into the ground and then off of Victorinos foot and they still don't agree that it's the right call. To their credit, they did say it very well could've hit Victorinos foot before showing the definitive angle. They then follow it up by saying that "Leyland has a beef."

 

Pretty humorous if you ask me.

On the Detroit feed, the field microphones picked up Leyland saying "If you didn't see it, why did you call it?"

 

I'm wondering if Barry didn't see it, went off Victorino's reaction (which was a bit melodramatic for it glancing off his toe nail), and he told Leyland as such.... Leyland asked him to check, obviously no one else saw (how could they), so he kept it as is...

 

I don't think Leyland would get that animated if Barry had told him straight up "I saw it hit his toe."

 

YMMV, at least they got the call right.

 

I also like how the announcer says "They should do this [conference the umpires] more often!" which he follows up with "I don't see how the second base umpire could see that if the home plate ump didn't."

Ironically the Tigers announcers acknowledged it hit him after looking at the "definitive" angle replay once.

The only thing a ball in the dirt cannot be (that a regular pitch can be) is a (correctly) called strike.

the announcers in this feed are so stupid ..... and how on earth they can't see that first base dugout close up super slo-mo hit his foot, you can clearly see his foot move!
