A player from the bench yells , a very vulgar or offensive comment at you , but you don't know who? ( was not looking at the bench it was after a called strike on there batter)

Can't toss anyone if you don't know who said it but I am calling time out, grabbing the appropriate HC and letting him know what happened.  And if it happens again he is leaving.

What was the comment?

What is vulgar or offensive to one is not to another.

You can use ******* to give us a idea of what was said.

Otherwise it is a Bench Warning at minimum and Manager or HC is getting run on the next one.

EJ their best player. If he says he didn't say it, then tell them that the offender needs to step forward so the right person goes.

Players need to understand that they can't lob insults and hide in a crowd.

My old UIC way back in the 90s told me this ....

Ask the manager who said it, or his pitcher is gone.  And then start tossing until he helps you ....it's that easy.

CONSEQUENCES!!!

Had exact same situation in a 12U game a few weeks ago.  Had just called out batter on a no-brainer BI call.  On the first pitch to the next batter I hear "The umpire is full of ****" from the dugout.  I call time, go to the dugout and tell the HC that the player who just interfered is ejected.  The EJ player says he didn't say it, I tell him that unless someone owns up to it he is gone.  In less than 5 seconds another kid raises his hand and we have justice.

As Semper said, what is inappropriate and/or vulgar is somewhat subjective and age-group specific.  In this case the **** word was over the line for a 12 year old.  Bye bye.

"Do you want to go home already so you can fu**ing jerk off!"offensive enough for you?

@MW???

Geez....   I don't think he was trying to insult your manhood.  He was just asking a valid question.

I would tell the manager it is the last of that, next is on him. I have told this before, I'm sure but adult regional wooden bat, batter rung up on a called third strike. He objects strenuously and gets tossed. Dugout starts chirping, he lets them have their say and them tells enough. It doesn't stop so he goes to the manager and tells him to pick one, somebody is going. The manager says he can't do that, PU told him to pick one or he would. One guy tosses himself. The PU tells him to take care of the dugout, don't make him come back. Swing and a miss, PU turns, calls time and tossed the dugout. Everybody not in the lineup, gone.

He strenuously objects?  Is that how its done?  Hmm!  Objection your honor!  "Overruled"  No, no, I STRENUOUSLY OBJECT!  (Sorry couldn't resist)

Define "very vulgar" vs "offensive".

Justin Bieber = very vulgar, Britney Spears = just offensive

My $.02

In that situation (which I've never had) I've been trained to go to the dugout and ask who said it.  If no-one admits it, you just randomly eject a player  (grayhawk's suggestion to pick their best is not a bad thought)  Either that player goes and you're done, or the 'real' perpetrator steps up, that player's gone and you're OK, but either way, someone has to go for that comment.  Oh, and I've also been taught that if a Manager or Coach try & stop you or remain wholly uncooperative, they go too.

I'll agree with picking a random player, if someone can give me rule/case support.

Unfortunately, the only rule cite I'm aware of for this 9.01c. Combine that concept w/good game management. (can't let the phrase go unpunished)

It (or advice similar to it &/or some of the advice above) must be in an Umpire Manual somewhere, but I don't have one with me right now.

This seems like one of the few situations where the restriction rule makes perfect sense...he's responsible for the bench, so it's perfectly ok to punish him, plus it affords him the opportunity to control them first hand. Now, if it happens again, there's no question that he gets tossed as well.

I don't see a need to restrict him, simply tell him to handle it or go home. Restriction never enters my mind. I have only come across one situation where it would have been a good thing,no assts, but it didn't dawn on me until a week later. I toss him or not, but that's me.

I was asking for a explanation of what was said.

Know I know the rest of the story and not have to ASSUME anything. :beerbang

Now knowing what was actually said.

I would have been sending someone home so they could fu**ing jerk off! :jerkit:

Actually I wouldn't consider it vulgar or offensive.

Then again 20 years of Military Service I heard and seen worse, so I am a little battle hardened. :beerbang

"No, I'm in a hurry because your wife's already there, and she charges by the half-hour."

I think restricting to the bench is only available in Fed ball, correct? This has happened to me a few times, and when it does, I walk over to the offending bench, and say, "Listen up you bunch of co*>***suck****, this *h*t has go to F*C***ING STOP NOW!"   Warn the HC and eject him next time something comes out of the dugout toward you or your partner.
