Had a...special partner last night. Lots of it was just run of the mill stuff....pretty much got every close call exactly wrong (every banger that was barely safe was called out, every close out was called safe). Didn't know any signals, positioning was ok but at times inexplicable (standing IN the 2B/3B baseline when should have been in C). Navy blue undershirt under black (which had numbers on it, which no one does around here, but it did match his "UMPIRE XX" vanity license plates!).

But the kicker that made it all unique was....shorts.

Not just any shorts. Not referee shorts. But standard heather grey umpire slacks. Cut and hemmed to just above the knee, clearly a homemade job. I was dumbfounded when he walked up to me with them at the car in pre-game. I was kinda rude but I couldn't help laughing and saying "WTH are you wearing???". I think it set the proper tone for what was to come.

:spit:  :spit:  :spit:  :spit:  I laughed out loud and had to explain to my co-workers what was so funny...(Needless to say, they didn't understand-One guy even asked me "How hot was it at game time?".. :smachhead:  :kissass:  )

I have to say that might take the cake on partner stories, I forget what its like to work with some of these Dummies! I've worked with the same partner for just about every game for 3 years...But reading these stories almost....ALMOST... makes me miss seeing who/what is going to show up at your game...

We had a guy years ago that insisted on a balloon. He got in the HS group and kept it. His first game he was on the plate with their association president. He had shin guards on the outside and a balloon. The president said he would go with the raft but if he if didn't put his shins under his pants he was working solo. This was also the guy that said he hated baseball but loved to umpire. That means he was an OOO of the worst kind. He could take the best moving game and blow it up.

How creative!   :spit:

(And now I know what to do with my old umpire pants --- cutoffs for around the house!   )

Huh?  What?  Where?  I've got to sign up for the bird watching expedition that gets to see these loonies.
