The only place I use mud is in adult baseball. We have enough that played pro ball they appreciate it.

I don't get my hands dirty. I let the catcher do it.

Once I start college level I will.

When you do start college and they give you a box of balls to rub up pregame don't go outside and grab a handfull of the flower box dirt to do it with.

We got an email not to do this so somebody done it and it was noticed.

if he wants it scuffed up he can do it himself to his own liking.  He will do that anyway if its not scuffed up the way he likes it.

For the JUCO's around the St. Louis area, most of them rub up baseballs for us.  High schools always give us brand new ones, very rarely are they rubbed.

I don't rub baseballs for HS ball here in TX. If they want them rubed they need to do it before it gets to my hand. If they give me a ball in the wrapper it stays in the wrapper until the pitcher takes it off. The home manager is responsible for providing baseballs, not the umpire.

So you throw a wrapped ball to the pitcher and he has to dispose of the wrapper?

Yep. The coach then realizes his mistake.

OK, I'm not an ump, so maybe I'm missing something . . . why not just tell the coach to give them to you ready to play?

Never have an issue with this in the LL games I do.  I get two balls from the home team, one ball from the visiting team and hand them to my partner to rub up a little as he sees fit.

I have yet (in 3.5 yrs) had a college game where I've seen a baseball that wasn't rubbed up before it got to me. Especially given the fact that you will be running thru a good supply of them throughout the game. I bought the canister of Lena's my first year on my mentors advice, and so far I have really only used it for High School.

That may be more of a regional/level thing I would imagine though. I will be prepared though. It sits in the 6 o'clock sector of the FSB next to the Murphy's bottle!

+1. Other than a JUCO league I am assigned to I have never gotten a ball in college game that wasn't rubbed up. Freshmen have to earn their scholarship money somehow!

And they cant all carry the equipment bags. lol.

But I did have to rub at a D1 game this year, and in post season we almost always have to rub.

You are joking right?  You won't take the plastic off and put it in your pocket?  I am guessing you toss guys pretty quick when the argue plays then too?

I use whatever we got around home plate.  As for keeping a pearl for the end of the game why?  We are about outs and strikes and keeping games moving.  A used ball is softer less likely to go out of the park and better grips for a pitcher.  If the coach doesn't want to give you more than 3 or 4 new ones per game, heck use them, rotate them early and let the end of the game have softer balls and more outs :)
