Softball Double-header

I'm a second year official.  I work mostly Baseball and Football, but am licensed for Softball as well.  Last year, I didn't do any high school softball, and only a dozen or so travel softball games.  This year I have 5 high school softball games scheduled, most of which have rained out so far.  So this past Saturday was my first chance, I had a Sophomore Double-header.

 

I show up to the field and am in the middle of an equipment check when the coach tells me that the other plate ump is in the other dugout.  ???  I go over and talk to him, he said the AD called him this morning to come cover the double-header.  I told him I had been scheduled for 3 months on these and games, we both were shocked to see each other.  We went and found the AD who said he had no problem paying us both, and explained that the confusion was created because I was supposed to have the Sophomores, but the away Varsity game field was unplayable.  The AD decided they were going to play a Sophomore game and then the Varsity game on the same field, so he wants two officials on each game.  

 

So it makes it easier on me to have a partner.  I took the plate for the Sophs, and the bases for the Varsity.  I did boot a call at first on a banger when two players covered 1st, but other than that it was uneventful.  

So on the day of my first HS softball game, I also got to work a Varsity game!

I can't get over these states that plan to have umpires show up only to work a single game.  What a waste of time.

I understand that, as I know umpires that live all over the country and everywhere is a little different.

 

I could not stand working anything less than DHs on a consistent basis, that's all that I'm saying.

We get maybe two doubles a year in HS. The rest of summer is another story

Same here...MOST of HS games are scheduled a singles, occasionally you'll get a DH or TH on a Saturday.  Most of the HS games I work are within 30 minutes of my house, so single games aren't a big deal to me.

We almost never do doubles for HS.  Games usually start at 3:30 or 4:00, most fields don't have lights so it's dark before a second game could possibly end.

Softball-$73 I have 40+ schools within 40 minutes of me. That's the conference.

Majority are within 30 minutes but some are up to but no farther than an hour. All of our game fees include $7 travel no matter how far. Varsity 83, jv and freshman $65 and modified (7th &8th grade) $58.

All Varsity - $75 plate or bases.  One DH this regular season on a Saturday.  4-5 games per week.  Longest drive for me within our association area is 20 minutes.  We do have guys that belong to more than one association so their drive time could be longer due to expanded area of coverage, but that is by their choice.

 

DH's here in So Cal during regular season are rare.  DH's during summer and fall are the norm on weekends.

Almost all of our HS dates are two games, be they varsity DHs, or a V/JV. Middle schools usually play two, a seven and a five, or two fives. The City of Birmingham MS league plays 1:45 time limits, and those games generally go no more than three innings at best.
