Good ejection. Putting myself in your shoes, I would have ejected at the same time you did. I might not have said as much as you. I prefer to just hold up my hand, give a stern look, and say "That's enough coach!". If you let him keep going, he would have continued and gotten worse as the game went on.

12U game. Fed rules. VT batting in top of 7th, trailing by 8 runs. Two outs. R3 and R2. Batter hits two hopper to 3rd, throws bat into catcher. Strikes him hard on bicep and shoulder. Catcher starts walking towards dugout holding shoulder and called for the coach twice. Ball bounces past F5. R3 heading home, R2 about to round 3rd. I kill the play for the thrown bat, and the catcher not being able to participate in play. Calling batter out. I said it was for throwing the bat, figuring people would understand that. Really I had him throwing the bat, causing injury and F2 not being able to participate in the play due to interference from thrown bat. Coach comes out to argue, I explain that the batter is out but I didn't go into interference explanation. Just explaining that the catcher was injured on the play due to the thrown bat. They were upset, and that was the last out of the game. Coach kept demanding I show him in the rulebook where I can do that. I just said the batter is out, and the game was over, and left quickly. So was Fed rule 7.3.6 a stretch in this case? Should I have called delayed dead, let the play continue and then warn? Thanks!

Interesting, he is not listed on the IHSA officials list for any sport. Either he is not patched or they removed him from the list already.

I have worked a handful of games on new turf fields. Last night was the first one with bad weather in the area. No lightening or thunder. Just a steady rainfall. Thru the first 3 innings, it was okay. Then it picked up a little harder. I was soaked, players were soaked. Coaches were willing to work on the baseballs, and go thru 8 new baseballs. 11U travel game. Thankfully, mercy rule in the 5th. The footing was fine, except for the last pitcher who was wearing running shoes. His landing foot would slip a little. So my question is, with the new turf fields, at what point do we cancel due to rain? Are there any specific things we should look for? The baseballs were not flying far, routine groundballs were turning into slow rollers. In the last inning, 3 outs were missed due to players not holding onto the ball on routine plays. I left wondering at what point we should be cancelling in the rain. Thanks.

For me UE is the opportunity to read and learn more about umpiring while sitting at my desk at work! So while trying to look busy at work, my mind is on the field!

I have two boy's playing baseball. I have a hard time watching. I watch for my kid's plays, but often the games move so slow, especially with inexperienced umpires. After 10 years of coaching and 5 of umpiring, I have a hard time just watching a game for fun. I am trying to be a parent and sit in my chair and keep my mouth shut! But find it very frustrating. I know the issue is me and my need to be in control of the game. Sorry to hear about your bad experience trying to watch a local game. When your son gets there, you might have a few bad situations, but baseball is a great game and most of the time it is played without incidents.

I was in a similar position last year. Rest and take it easy. There can be a cumlative affect when dealing with concussions. The Wendy's pads are great! And kept me feeling safer. Get well soon!

Northern IL/Chicago Burbs. Two man for Varsity, one man for JV and below. Rates are similar to those already posted. I do a lot of travel baseball and rate is $50 per game and working solo. A few 14U teams will pay for two umps. Tournaments typically have two, and the pay is $45. Recently more tournaments have been using one umpire for the pool play games and two umpires for elimination rounds.

I'm a second year official. I work mostly Baseball and Football, but am licensed for Softball as well. Last year, I didn't do any high school softball, and only a dozen or so travel softball games. This year I have 5 high school softball games scheduled, most of which have rained out so far. So this past Saturday was my first chance, I had a Sophomore Double-header. I show up to the field and am in the middle of an equipment check when the coach tells me that the other plate ump is in the other dugout. ??? I go over and talk to him, he said the AD called him this morning to come cover the double-header. I told him I had been scheduled for 3 months on these and games, we both were shocked to see each other. We went and found the AD who said he had no problem paying us both, and explained that the confusion was created because I was supposed to have the Sophomores, but the away Varsity game field was unplayable. The AD decided they were going to play a Sophomore game and then the Varsity game on the same field, so he wants two officials on each game. So it makes it easier on me to have a partner. I took the plate for the Sophs, and the bases for the Varsity. I did boot a call at first on a banger when two players covered 1st, but other than that it was uneventful. So on the day of my first HS softball game, I also got to work a Varsity game! Chad Myers
