Lots of threads on this.

Personally I use Murphy's Oil Soap/water in a spray bottle to clean and cheap hairspray to polish during the season/between games

In the off-season I usually give the shoes a thorough cleaning and a proper polish.

Since I've gotten my NB 460's, they stay pretty clean and shiny on their own, just a quick spray and wipe with Murphy's and they are good to go.

Has anyone ever heard of Shoe Polish?

I think shinning shoes has become a lost talent.  :hi5:

Two time tested tips. ( I could not say that 3 times very fast!)

1. Shoe polish- BUT it comes off on other things if you don't isolate them for transport . Armorall leather wipes in you umps bag.

2. When storing shoes for an extended time fill them with plain uncooked white rice AND if you have a shoe box put 2-3 cups in the shoe box as well. really absorbs the moisture.

It's a mild soap, it's not going to hurt the shoes.  Do a search and you'll find it.  I learned to do this from this site 3 years ago.

Liquid polish? Sure. Wax paste? Ain't nobody got time for dat. Seriously Murphy's and a shine sponge does such a good job I don't see the need for the time invested.

I noticed the whites on. My NB base shoes were stained. Used a Mr. clean magic eraser. Worked like magic.

Hence the name "Magic Eraser"....  :smachhead:

I just drive to the airport and let the shoeshine guy do my shoes!

Why do you drive all the way to the airport? Most fancier hotels have a guy there.

I'll look into that!

I dilute 2 capfuls of Murphy's Oil Soap in a spray bottle. 12 ounces cost about $0.02. I typically break out the Kiwi polish once a month. After the game I spray them down, hit the edges with a brush and towel them off. Ready to go in 1 minute and my shoes look great. Some use hair spray but I don't. Credit to K Finnerty who told me about this.

I do my plate shoes the same way I did my boots when I was in the military.  Black Kiwi shoe polish. Give them a good spit shine once in a while. Then after a game apply a little polish and buff with a good brush.  They look good!!

I picked up one of those pump spray bottles used for gardening at the Home Depot last year and filled it with water. Spray down your shoes immediately after every game and apply a polish once a week. Most days you don't need to use the polish.

I personally love to sit down and give my plate shoes (or work boots, or my doc martens) a good thorough proper shining.... as was mentioned earlier it is becoming a lost art, but damn there is something that just makes you feel like a mans man with a fresh polished pair of shoes...

Murphy's is the bomb to clean em up and a quick shine with a sponge or some hair spray will have you in good shape when the week and weekend are rolling along.  IMHO though you have got to keep em fresh with a coat (or 3) of Parade Gloss with a little spit applied at least once a month.  As a matter of routine I spend a quiet part of the last Sunday of the month stripping down the shoes and getting them refreshed.  I have always found that a good treatment helps them look better longer and keeps the leather portions in good order.

I'm with semper though, a good proper polish is becoming a lost art form.  I guess the good news at this point is that it's not likely that many Gunny's are gonna accept a short cut to spit shined combat boots.

Murphies, water, and then hairspray does the trick for me. I don't have allot of time to spend cleaning my shoes and this does the trick and they look like new. I haven't seen anyone with spit shined shoes around here and would find it very challenging with the white that I have on my Reeboks.

The big thing is that they are clean, I have seen many umpires that don't care about cleaning their shoes because "they will just get dirty after an inning"..... some people....
