Hello, I'm new to the forum.  I'm getting back into calling baseball this year, umpired little league for 2 years after high school while in college but recently got the itch again.  I'll be calling everything from coach pitch-14/u competitive and possibly some high school summer ball occaisionally

I'm trying to update my gear and came across this CP, any info/feedback on it would be greatly appreciated. It seemed like a nice value but not sure how it would hold up againts the older guys

I had this very model my first year and had absolutely no complaints. No major gaps (unlike the sister armored model - avoid!), good protection, doesn't sag, a little warm but not stifling. One severe flaw though - those exposed plastic buckles. A fairly soft 9 yr old rec ball pitch hit one and broke it - and Champro was completely unwilling to give or even sell me a replacement.

However, a little bit of duct tape fixed it. My son uses it now, it's a fine starter protector if you're trying to save money (I was unemployed at the time I started). I've since upgraded to a Gold and now an All-Star System 7 but I wouldn't hesitate to use this for now. If you have the money, though, just get a Gold/Platinum or an All-Star...you prob will anyway and in the long run it'll be cheaper to just do it in one step.

gotcha, thanks for the info!  can you recommend a specific higher end model? I dont mind spending a little more now, just want something comfortable and thats going to last, but would like to stay under $100

I've also seen the Champion hard shell cps for around $45?

I STRONGLY recommend staying away from the Champion hard shell...major, significant gaps. If the $ limit is a hard limit, look at the Wilson Charcoal. Or hit the Play It Again (used equipment retailer/ebay/craigslist circuit to look for a used Gold/Platinum/All-Star.

uggh.....for some reason, I not only read BUT ALSO typed Champion when I meant Champro....it's the Champro hard shell that I STRONGLY recommend avoiding. Sorry....

lol thanks everyone, didnt mean to open up a can of worms. I think I'll order the ChampION hard shell CP and upgrade at a later date if needed.  I've never worked the leagues I'm starting in or with the assigers so I want to make sure it will work out before investing too much.

I have made deals with fellow umpires on here for both the Champion hard shell and Wilson Charcoal (thanks D62 and Maineac  ). I don't buy them for myself but rather for fellow high school umpires. I have zero concerns selling these to good friends of mine and would recommend either of them as a cheap and good alternative to the System7, Platinum, Gold, UnEqual, etc.

Why would I do that? You have just as much access to this site and the deals there in as I do. The difference is that the umpires I am working as middle man for are not on U-E... for reasons I have not yet figured out.

Welcome!

What is 14u competitive?

Probably Travel / Select Ball, Rolando .....

Then why not say so. To me all games are competitive. Both teams are competing to see who can win.

Sorry just don't like when people say that.

I'm just a grumpy old man.

By the way I'm working a competitive t-ball game this weekend.

Ouch....didnt realize things were so serious on these forums.  Travel ball isnt the common term around here. They use rec ball and competitive.

Rolando is a grump! :-) What is used as a term in your neck of the woods may not be understood everywhere else. Also....don't take things too personally .....the typed word can come across the wrong way easily:D Sent from my XT907 using Tapatalk 2
