Real bargain they got going on there.

My association has worked out a $30 price for each shirt that we have to buy, needless to say some of the veteran guys are not pleased about spending $60 on shirts to add to their wardrobe. I am sure the fine folks at the FHSAA are loving the kick-backs they are getting from their "new" shirts that we are forced to buy from Honigs (or GD). :hopmad:

$38 is a ridiculous price for the shirt. Even $30 if they are sending that cheap Pakistani shirt,

Move up to JUCO and tell Gainesville to go fly! That's what I did a couple of years ago and haven't thought twice about it. Now I just register for NFHS, and do fill in duty for my Assn. when they need it, and use my old damn shirt with the patch. I've worked all the playoffs I've wanted to and the post season is really where they get nutso about Uniform stuff. We used to have a fairly reasonable crew down there, it seems to have taken a dive over the last few years, and we're back to being treated like the necessary evil again.

I shop at Honig's all the time, but when they came out and told me I was going to buy only this stuff through Honig, at a ridiculous price it was time to hit the auto-eject on those fools.

I'm just pissed that they force us to wear such a poor quality product. My basketball shirt has horribly faded lines and can only imagine how crappy the baseball shirts will be. :no:

When it comes to buying uniforms sure we have a lot of choices. Most of us have certain brands we like and dislike. However when you break into varsity HS ball or college ball it's no longer about the uniform. It should be about your pursuit of working the highest level ball available to you. This fall I was picked up by 3 conferences which all require their own separate uniform sets. Not to mention they are required to be purchased from a manufacturer that....let's just say they don't rank high on my list for customer value. But do I complain about it.... absolutely not! Because I know that for each shirt or jacket I order I know there are 100 plus guys that would give their strike calling arm to be where I am. So $750 later....I could care less about the uniforms because I know it's about my pursuit to call the highest level of college baseball. Besides, I'll make it back in one conference weekend.

So if you're worried about uniforms maybe higher level ball is not for you.... but rest assure there are guys lined up behind you for miles ready to take your place at every level we work.

Thanks for that perspective Fittske. Just to be clear my issue has nothing to do with Honigs, it would prob be better fit in a post about the decline of the FED state assn here, and imposing mandates instead of giving younger guys a chance to get better (and I'm not a younger guy,but I can always get better). In the end its just my two pennies of opinion, at least for FED around here. Other than that, I was trained to always do what the Romans were doing in my area and assn, that has served me well over the years

I tend to agree with this but most of the new guys who have no prior umpiring experience drop out when they find out they will have to pay close to $500 just to get their first game. While on the other hand those varsity guys are fiercely fighting for their spots and post season recommendations. :shrug:

They spend tons money on some questionable things (high dollar sunglasses, 4 pairs of turf shoes, retrofitting their CP, $7 in energy drinks and sunflower seeds before every game) yet at the same time bitch about the cost of shirts, or that Polywools go up in price by a few bucks.

It is your uniform-required to work-and you only buy them every few years.

You prob make $1000 in a HS spring season and complain about spending $37 to wear the required shirt!

Maybe my state is just lucky, but to me the patches seem kind of dumb. Granted, if I ever need to wear one, I will wear one, but especially in high school, what's the need for a patch? Is there that much association competition?

Alright you got me on to the dark side but I still know my whole association is furious about this topic and we are all mostly walk in customers to Honigs. I'm primarily concerned about the quality of the shirts and just up it's decent.

What it means to wear it? Who are "you guys"? Why not mail high school umpires a patch when they register each year and tell them they need to attach it to their shirt? That is what most states, including mine, do. If i were a high school-only umpire and I have to buy my own equipment and uniforms, I'm going to buy it where I want. Not where the state wants just so they can make money off of it. If the state body wants Honigs shirts to be used because they're such great products, they need to supply them. It is all about who is giving them the biggest kickback.

Yes. This is one of the things that scares new guys away.

I don't have four pair of base shoes and I don't spend a bunch of money on stuff I won't ever use weekly when umpiring. I can only wear one pair of shoes at a time, so I don't see the need for an abundance of equipment. The whole thing to me is more about them telling you where you have to buy it from, not really the price as much. (Although $37 for a short sleeve shirt is high to me)
