Although I first saw this on a competing forum, I was able to verify this information from the web address below which has always given out factual information in the past, to the best of my knowledge.

And here is the announcement (finally) about the retirements out of New York, but not on the MLB website yet.

http://sports.espn.g...tory?id=6151393

Unfortunately the line about Reilly starting in 1983 is wrong. That was when Rick Reed started and Reed retired last year. Reilly started in 1977 along with Steve Palermo, Ken Kaiser, and Vic Voltaggion. 1977 was an expansion year with the additions of Toronto and Seattle.

Here was the official MLB version. At least they got the part right about Reilly and Crawford starting in 1977. Reilly went straight to MLBU in the 77 expansion without any "call-up" games. Crawford had worked "call-up" games in 1976.

I read an unconfirmed report that Muchlinski has been tendered his MiLB release and will not even be in pro ball this upcoming season.

Well, I would imagine the sooner they can let you know that you are not being considered for MLB, the better, so one can get one with their life, since he started his career in 1999. He had moved up from 33 call up games in 08, to 48 in 09 and to 69 in 2010 which was a progression rather than going to other way. Hopefully, if this information is confirmed, he had the good sense to pocket the money made at the MLB level as a call up, and just live off the per diem. That would give him something to fall back on that the regular AAA umpire that gets dismissed would not have. The PCL is still showing Muchlinski on their 2011 list, but it could probably have some errors, especially if there are any late dismissals. Good luck to him in his future endeavors if this report is confirmed.

On another note, the PCL list also shows Tripp Gibson moving up from the Southern League, Bret Robson moving up from the Texas League and Quinn Wolcott moving up from the Southern League and now Dan Oliver from the Texas League and now Kellen Levy from the TL.

The International League shows Gerald Ascani moving up from the Southern, Karl Best from the Eastern, Kelvin Bultron from the Eastern, Jon Byrne from the Eastern, Jeff Gosney from the Texas, Adam Hamari from the Eastern, and Brad Myers from the Texas. Chad Whitson was a late season call up last year from the Eastern League and will start his 1st full year at the AAA level.

Tripp Gibson is in fact moving up to AAA. He was one of our instructors at the Southern Umpire Camp. Very good Umpire and Instructor. He is also a great guy.

Jax.... how was the camp? I was all set up to go, but ,had to cancel my trip due to unforeseen work complications.

It was great. Fun, a lot of work, learned a lot. Instructors were wonderful.

Highly recommended . I may go to the 3-man in October

Where can I find the info on the MiLB assignments? I would like to check up on several I know.

Other than being on the inside, or going to the PBUC evaluation course in Florida as they evaluate the graduates of JEA and HW, and walking up and asking someone there who has this information and would be willing to share it with you, the only way I have figured out is to do what I do and go to this web address.

http://web.minorleag...l.com/index.jsp

Go to the upper right hand corner and click on "Leagues". When all the leagues appear, just click on that league and go to the leagues website. Go to the upper right and click on "About" and a drop down window will appear with either "umpires" on the drop down or "Staff and Personnel". Click on that and see if it brings up the 2011 umpire staff. The only 3 I could find were the PCL, International, and Carolina reporting 2011 staffs. Some Leagues did not have the Word "Umpires" to click on at all nor were they listed under "staff and personnel".,, "yet". Some sites had 2010 rosters.

The other way to still skin the cat as the old saying goes once you find out opening day for each league, is to click on the word "scoreboard" on the upper left side usually. There should be list of games on a given night with the teams that are playing each other. Click on "Box Score", and the umpires should be listed at the bottom of the box score.

That is how I find out that type of info that I have used in several post's. There is nothing fancy or being on the inside to find this widely available information on the internet, just clicking and patience and write what you need down.

Good luck.

And there was a post on another forum that still has Muchlinski for 2011 MLBUST (hopefully so) and unconfirmed reports of his dismissal may not be correct. The only difference in this year and last year was that Clint Fagan and Chris Ward replaced Casey Moser and Damien Beal.

Spotted so far in Spring Training 2011--Campos, Tichenor, Estabrook, Muchlinski, Reyburn, Bellino, Lollo, Carapazza, Sinclair, Basner, Funneman, Rackley, Gonzalez, Barga, Barrett, Conroy, Ward, Larson, Ripperger, Tiller, Tumpane, Loveless, Blaser, Buchanon, Porter, Tiller, and Fagan.

Sometimes I think a veteran player's respect means, don't call that corner pitch that you've been calling all day on me. Show me some respect, its OK on one of the young guys but not me a veteran. In other words, for the players, respect is in relationship to the call you make for and against them, for the managers and umpires, respect many times is much more (not always) about communicating with each other about the call, rather than strictly the call itself. The manager's and umpires are pretty much on the same page, but the players are on a totally different page since respect is strictly about the call itself (not always either), which obviously, if it goes against them you are not showing them respect and therein lies the problem with players. Until the players get off the respect based on the call issue, there will still be strife in communicating with each other. However, apparently from the years way back where it was either playing in MLB or going back to the coal mines, all types of communications with players and umpires in general has seemed to toned down over the years.

Here is some respect. Pick just 30 out of this group as your hero and someone to look up to from this group. They all have a lot of good stats which seem to scream hero in the fact that good stats and hero go hand in hand (most times) it seems.

And apparently talk of Mike Muchlinski not being retained this year have been greatly exaggerated.

Sunday February 27, 2011

Royals 4, Rangers 2

Umpires: HP: Mike Muchlinski. 1B: Doug Eddings. 2B: . 3B: Chris Tiller.

Monday, February 28, 2011

Giants 10, Brewers 9

Umpires: HP: Stephen Barga. 1B: Rob Drake. 2B: . 3B: Mike Muchlinski.

At this time the 3 MiLB umpires with the most "call-up" games worked are Campos, Tichenor, and Estabrook. If one of these gentlemen get that extra opening, then that would leave only 2 umpires on the staff with more than 2 years of call-up experience (135 games=1 full year for a full-time MLBU). Mike Muchlinski is next at 219 (just over 1 1/2 years worth) and then Reyburn and Bellino at 148 and 144 respectively (just over 1 years worth). It would not have made much sense (IMHO only, and being an armchair quarterback) to have let Muchlinski go at this point, but, just like in the real world, you never know, as not all call-up umpires make it to full time MLBU. It looks like from old historical records, that back when the Jerry Crawford's (and earlier than Jerry) were moving up, someone who received some call-up games one year, immediately went full time the next year. This changed somewhere in the 80's to where there was no guarantee anymore that being a call-up would lead to full time employment in the future.

Spotted so far in Spring Training 2011 in order of Total MLBU regular season games worked--Campos, Tichenor, Estabrook, Muchlinski, Reyburn, Bellino, Tiller, Porter, Carapazza, Blaser, Gonzalez, Tumpane, Rackley, Conroy, Ripperger, and Barrett. Ward and Fagan are also working. Others seen working games are Barga, Basner, Buchanan, Budahn, Burke, Conrad, Funneman, Larson, Lollo, Loveless, Sinclair, and Thigpen.

I was very sad to see Moser and Robinson not return. They were 2 of the best guys we had in the PCL.

I had the opportunity to learn from Moser at the South TX Umpire clinic. Stand up guy!

Yes, but your getting a friend of Umpire-Empire's in Trip Gibson over in the PCL. I was hoping he'd get IL to get to see him. Look out you'll like what you see,

Ah, so that's the "new hire" 3rd person that we knew would be going to the Brian Gorman crew

Can you spell phenom.

Bellino went straight to the NYP in 2003, Knight and Muchlinski were already in the PCL. Barry, Campos, Estabrook, and Tichenor were already in AA. He went back to the NYP to start 2004 and then quickly over to the Midwest League. 2005 in the FSL. 2006 to the EL for just 1 year, not 2 in AA and then 2007 to AAA in the PCL. Probably never a crew chief except that brief stint in NYP his 2nd year. His first call up game was 2008 even though he was not on the call up list. 2009 saw 31 games as a call up and 2010 saw 112. 144 total MLB games which is just 9 games more than a regular season MLBU would work per year. So, basically promoted after 1 year as a call-up although he was technically in the minors 8 years and passed 3 others who had over 350 games experience. Skipping the strike year of 99 you would have to go back to Jerry Meals in 1998 to find someone who had worked fewer call-up games before being promoted to the full time staff. Meteoric rise. He does have both a JD (and passed the Illinois bar exam) and a MBA, so who says umpires aren't smart. Since he is obviously very very good, maybe they wanted to get him up there quickly so they wouldn't loose him to those other professions should he get put on hold for a while, like others have, when there are few openings. He is also the youngest to get promoted in quite a while at only 32. Could Lance Barrett be the first to get to MLB before 30 years old since Wegner, Wendlestedt, Runge and Marquez during the 99 strike and the first since Dreckman pre-strike?? Of the senior umpires the now retired Crawford and Reilly went up at 29 and 27 respectively. Hirschbeck and Hallion at 29, DeMuth 28, Scott and Welke 26, West and Tschida at 25.

Also, the website that was showing "new hire" for Gorman's crew and had Bill Hohn on the Gerry Davis crew this year, now has a TBA in the Bill Hohn slot. TBA in the past has been a DL situation like Chuck Meriwether last year and Larry Poncino before that. Wonder who will get that TBA spot which would turn into a FT spot next year like Chuck's did?

Here are excerpts from an ESPN article about the umpires missing from the 2009 playoffs due to injuries.

While federal laws prohibit Major League Baseball from discussing injuries of employees, FOXsports.com has learned that the sidelined umpires include crew chiefs John Hirschbeck (testicular cancer), Charlie Reliford (back), Jerry Crawford (back), Tim Welke (concussion), Ed Montague (concussion and neck), Gary Darling (ankle and foot) and Rick Reed (stroke).

Other umpires who are sidelined by injuries include Kerwin Danley (concussion), Alfonso Marquez (back), Brian Runge (details unknown), Bill Hohn (back) and Ed Hickok (concussion).

Several of them did return from the injuries in September, but given their limited time on the field this year they were not included in the list of postseason candidates.

I will "assume or should the word be presume", from this article that Bill Hohn's TBA/DL status is probably related to the back injury mentioned above. That would be 3 umpires in 3 years having to retire due to back injuries. Charlie Reliford last year, Jerry Crawford this year and Bill Hohn next year.

2011 Umpire Crews

crew_2011.jpg

Now that the retire at 55 mandate (around 84 or 85) has ended, the assault on Bill Klem's 5370 games worked can continue. Only Scott, Tschida, Welke, and West have much of a chance of catching this by the age of 65 or 66 since they started so young. If Cousins works 7 more years he will break Froemmings record of working 38 years (which broke Klem's record of 37) and will be 71. West can break the years worked (on the field) if he works 8 more years since he was knocked out of 2 years on the field (he got his 2 years seniority back) and will be 66. However, he needs to work 9 more years on the field to break the number of games record Klemm still at 5370 (regular season games) since he lost 300 games due to the Strike. Scott, Welke, and Tschida also have a chance at both records if they work till they are 65 (these stats in this paragraph are just rough guesses not calculated stats-sorry).

Chief, looks like you need to take a road trip to a PCL city :P I make it to almost every OKC RedHawks game, so I will watch for Trip.

Its great to see Bellino get promoted! He is an amazing umpire, always very professional.

Chris Segal from the Southern League was just added to the PCL Roster.

And Kellen Levy(TL) was just added recently in addition to Trip Gibson(SL), Dan Oliver(TL), Bret Robson(TL), and Quinn Wolcott(SL) who were added earlier.

They replaced Jason Arends, John Brammer, Casey Moser, Jeff Latter, Brad Purdom, and Will Robinson

The International League added Gerald Ascani(SL), Karl Best(EL), Kelvin Bultron(TL), Jon Bryne(EL), Jeff Gosney(TL), Adam Hamari(EL), and Brad Myers(TL). Chad Whitson(EL) was a late season call up last year.

They replaced Jason Bradley, Chris Bakke, Damien Beal, Jon Merry, and Stephen Barga, however, Barga was transferred to the PCL.

All the above were AA crew chiefs except Best (who had been in the SL the year before), Levy(who had been in SL before), and Bultron (who was seeing his 1st year in AA after being in the FSL the year before).

Of those promoted to AAA, Quinn Wolcott is the youngest at 24 (and youngest in all of AAA now instead of Lance Barrett), and Bultron and Oliver are the oldest of those promoted at 33.

Todd Tichenor now has that TBA position on the Davis crew like Knight had last year. Should be named as a member of the staff next year when Hohn retires, probably at the end of December 2011 if it was like Meriwether and Poncino before him.

Just for fun, the below web address shows how the figure out the umpire scheduling. To understand it fully you must be good at statistics, but you can get the jest of it and also see some of the rules they must go by for off days, etc.

By the way, I wonder how long it will take them to notice they incorrectly spelled Todd's last name?! lol

Looks like it was added after the fact, and maybe not by MLB. The font, size, and weight are all different.
