Im confused because the umpire was at 3BX when the play happened. He just continued to move to get out of the way of the runner and ended up on 1BL when the call was made.

looks to me as if he's moving the entire time ....but, that said, the first movement looks like he's starting from the point of the plate and adjusting ...and as I understand it, ...it's taught that way

Ok.. when he ball is hit, the 1st thing you do is go straight back to the point of the plate, and watch the play develop, then adjust after reading the throw and the runner.

Look i know it a long drive.. but there is a clinic in Jonesboro, AR.. I think you really should come too.. Heck I will give you a $25 discount.... you will be surprised at what we will teach you.

Also going to the point of the plate, and watching... makes our Umpiring easier.. its less movements, there is no need for the PU ( even in 2 man) with a runner on 2nd to go anywhere else on a base hit ( non fair or foul) but to the POTP...

He saw the play at 3BLE, he moved to keep from being hit by the runner, continued to watch the catcher for the ball.

I have never heard a umpire move cause he didnt want to be hit by the runner... he moved with the catcher...

Here is another plate play to stay at the point in the CWS game, since we are on plate plays.

click on video at the top, then go to the right and click on Rios RBI single

And here is one during the Arizona game where the umpire made the correct call, but it looks like he should have moved off the point and gone to 3BLE. Once the play develops and progresses to a particular point and you have anticipated the play (note: not the call) and the position you are going to need, it is hard to do anything at the last minute when the play develops differently than you anticipated, other than the old step and lean.

once again, click on videos at the top, go to the right with the videos and click on Alonso's 2 run single.

Just different looks at positioning for the young guys.

PS--sorry I could not get this from the regular videos at MLB.com as it was not under a category given and I do not have any of their premium stuff or know how to get at every single play and video that MLB makes every day and drag it in here.
