Is this a mound visit with the pitcher?

Baes loaded, none out (not that its relevant) defensive coach requests time to meet with his infielders. I'm BU, he walks out to the grass about 5 ft behind the mound and the 4 infielder's meet him there. The pitcher joins in as well. I watched and overheard and nothing was said or inferred directly to the pitcher about his pitching, etc.

Should the defensive team be charged with a mound visit?

Yep. The only time I don't charge is if it's medical, and then I stay there to be sure they don't abuse it.

* "If the manager or coach goes to the catcher or infielder and that player then goes to the mound (or the pitcher goes to the infielder at his position) before there is an intervening play (a pitch or other play), that will be the same as the manager or coach going to the mound."

Yup - it's a visit.

The managers in the LL I was UIC for a few years ago used to request 'Time', get it and then go stand on the foul side of either the 1BL/3BL and speak w/their pitchers, believing (I kid you not) that if they didn't cross the line, it couldn't be counted as a visit. Of course, almost all of the umpires were untrained parent volunteers (hell, I was one for a few years) and would not know enough to charge them a visit anyway.

I put a stop to that right away - much to the chagrin of most of the upper level (well, Majors & Juniors) coaches who thought they were being clever.

Oh - and back to the OP - I don't know about anyone else, but when I'm BU and there's a mound visit, I move away. The conference belongs to the PU, not me. I do not listen to their conversation at all - this is the DM's opportunity to come out to his F1 and say anything he wants that he thinks will improve F1's performance, including blaming every problem in the world on the umpires if he feels like it. It's none of my business unless they make it my business by doing/saying something loud &/or stupid.

Dragon - in LL prior to 2005 the coaches were required to stop at the foul line. They couldn't go to the mound.

I was UIC from 2005 to 2009; before that I was just a parent volunteer. (they were desperate!) Guess by the time I read the entire rule book, that part was gone.

I had one a few years ago.... Pitcher is the HC's son. HC is in the dugout sitting on the bench chirping at the kid about how he's pitching and such, typical stuff. Finally about the 3rd inning, the kid looks at me calls TIME, and after I grant it he goes running into the dugout and yells at his dad "Stop talking to me!" and runs back out to the mound. I know the HC very well and I look at him and say "Eric, that's a visit"... He started laughing!!!

speaking of the kids, when doing the plate one game, i asked the catcher do you have a cup on right before the first pitch and he said yes, then the coach asked him the same thing and he says "geez, yes i do!!!! do you want to come over here and tap on it to check?, lets get this game going!!"

 

its a rule for the catcher to be wearing a cup in our league just to clarify.

 

after the inning i asked the coach, "you going to let him talk to you like that?" his reply was...."i have to his dad signs my paycheck"

Every league I work we ask the coaches at the plate meeting if their players properly and legally equipped.

That's all you gotta do!

You're right, Jocko - pretty damn funny, but not any funnier than watching me do anything else that first season!

 

I had no clue what I was doing; before I took the job my highest level umpiring was that I had done the plate on one Majors game for a guy who wanted to leave town early.  (I told you the league was deperate)

 

After my first season, things got much, much better.
