Hello all. I was wondering when you guys are working a game either behind the plate or bases, do you guys have a place where you place keys, wallet and phone? I couldn't imagine working with any of these items in my pocket, but I also don' think it would be safe leaving them unoccupied or unsecured. Thanks all!

I put my car key in the zippered pocket of my Ump-Attire ultimate ball bag. Everything else stays in the car or if I work a field where there is a place to change I put it in my gear bag (including the car key).

Everything stays in the trunk except my single car key. Plate games the key goes in the zipper of my ump attire ultimate ball bag. Base games it goes in the back pocket.

Um, if you leave your cell phone in the car, how are you going to respond to text messages between innings???:)

The only issue I have is leaving my cell phone in my car when it's hot. I had one that got fried on a Saturday double-header that went long... Now, if it's going to be an all day thing, I try and find somewhere outside of my car to leave my cell phone. Other than that, everything's in the car.

I've got one of those 1-gallon WalMart water jugs with the fabric jacket that I hang on the fence with a caribiner. I had my wife sew a pocket on it, and it carries my cell phone, spare indicator, pen and notebook. The carabiner has my keys on it, so I can never forget to take my jug home with me.

Phone goes in my back pocket on vibrator along with door key to my car. You never know when an emergency may come up. Everything else goes in the trunk of my car. IF I NEED TO I CAN CHECK BETWEEN INNINGS. NEVER HAD TO USE IT BUT HAD A PARTNER WHO HAD A FAMILY EMERGENCY THAT HE DIDN'T FIND OUT ABOUT FOR 3 HOURS.

I have a spare remote fob that I carry in the velcro pocket of my ball bag or my pants pocket. Other than that I leave it all in the car. If I feel I need bring water to the field, it is in a "disposable" bottle that if the post game situation dictates I won't need to feel the need to retrieve it in order to make an exit to avoid any further drama. BTDT (Been there, done that).

I can not believe the number of items some people bring on the field. I might bring a drink on the field in some games (summer games.....more laid back). I usually hide my keys somewhere on my car. Other than a stopwatch in my back pocket when I'm on the bases, I bring absolutely nothing to the field.

Do what I do. Buy a Nutty Buddy 2 sizes larger than you need. This is where I keep my car keys, wallet, cell phone, and extra indicator. As a side benefit, it distracts the ladies from complaining about any and all calls during the game as their focus is elsewhere.

I guess that would work depending how small you are. Considering most of us on this site would fit in the "Mongo" we in no way could buy one two sizes larger.

Now mind you it gives a great comeback to the ladies when they ask "Why don't you keep your keys down there?"

"I got something else down there...After the game I can show if you like.":Cool2:

A key contact in your family should know your schedule. For example, my wife knows where I am just in case of the above. I'd NEVER bring a cell phone on the field with me. And, ... it bothers me when my partner does. Nothing worse than looking out between innings and he's pulled his blackberry out of his pocket :TD:

That's not what it's for. If you've got an injured player and needs 911 right now, you can't spend time running around sayin "Anybody got a cell phone?" You may also need police assistance, or just want to call the Adminustrator and tell him to turn the lights on.

Not my concern, ...I'm there to administer the rules of the game, period.

So what if your partner is injured and needs emergency medical attention - not your concern either?

Hmmm, let's see, ....how about I go to my car and call 911 ONLY if NO ONE ELSE has a phone.

Come on guys, let's not get too caught up in all of this.

Personal opinion here, this is mine: You don't need to have a cell phone on your person when doing a game. It's not right, or wrong, ....but it's my opinion.:TD:

I am not getting "too caught up" in this, just asking a follow up question to your original response.

Quite often when there is a need to use a phone the umpire is often the only person (not a parent or coach) who is not "invested" in the situation at hand. So actually you may be the best one to make a call as you will be the most rational one out there.

Also, if the lights don't turn on the umpires are often viewed as the sole "official" who can get them turned on.

Bottom line - having your phone on you can be helpful when it is needed. Your car can often be far away from the field. If I know I am working with a partner who is not carrying a phone, I will put mine inside the zippered pocket of my ball bag with all of the ringers turned off. I have taken it out only once during a game and it was to get lights turned on so we could get a game completed. I was the only one who had the administrator's number.

That wasn't directed 'at you' specifically, ....thus the term 'guys' meaning, everyone ......

Not trying to be a jerk here all, ...just saying my opinion. Not getting too caught up in it, meant, don't over analyze the fact that I don't think there's really a need to have a cell phone on my person while doing a game. For those who do, fine, ...as long as you're not taking it out between innings, like I mentioned above....

Fair enough.......

I'm not an irrational guy whatsoever. I can see there could be a reason here and there to have a cell on you, certainly, and your sitch is one of them. In my eyes however, ...most of those situations are way too far and in-between.

Again, ...that's just me .......

When's the last time you've been somewhere and no one else has a cell phone?

Posted

The only time I ever had a phone on the field is when I left my watch in my football bag...had to keep time somehow....hated it and I was heckled by my fellow blues...as well I should have been!

So if I'm 40-50 miles from home and somebody has to get in touch with me for an emergency I should just let my wife know where I will be. Well what if it is your wife that the emergency is about.

Ok, jomatiky, I'm sorry, but you're going to be used as an example here, so please take it with a grain of salt.

Please re-read what I've written, then reconsider your post above. I did not say LEAVE YOUR PHONE AT HOME, did I?? Wait, let me check for you, .....nope, ...I didn't say that :TD:
