During the off season how often do you read the rule book?

I know for me i read about every day, i keep a book by the crapper and when I'm at the think tank,I read something everyday..LOL

Mazz I do NOT read the OBR rule book because it makes no sense. Since I umpire both FED / OBR leagues I rely heavily on Carl Childress's BRD (baseball rule differences) I simply use the OBR rule book as a reference point.

I have JR and will get the latest copy of the MLBUM (perhaps as a Christmas Present)

The OBR rule book is very poorly written and indexed poorly.

Around Jan / Feb I get my latest copy of the NEW FED rule / case book and hit those books "hard" to get ready for the HS season.

Other then a CBL league in the summer (which is for the most part OBR based that adopted the NCAA Collision / Slide rules) I do not umpire collegiate ball so I do not read those materials.

I have put "Maximizing the Two Man System" on my wish list for xmas and while my wife looked at me like I was crazy I am confident it is an ideal gift from the in-laws. I will read that as much or more than any rule book this winter.

It's funny you posted this poll. I've been reading the J/R manuel along with the rule book for about an hour in bed before crashing each night. I'm suffering from serious withdrawl. My fiance doesn't get it, "Why are you reading rulebooks in November? You don't umpire until the Spring."

Wait 'till she catches you standing naked in front of a mirror with your mask on, practicing your punch-out.....

I typically read the Fed rulebook, Fed Casebook, OBR rulebook or PBUC Two Man Umpiring Manual (Red Book) for 15 minutes or so each night. I am waiting for the Jim Evans Maximizing the Two Man System to come in the mail and when I am done with that I will likely buy a J/R manual to get me through until spring.

Never naked, yet. But she is constantly catching me practicing in front on the mirror. She doesn't see it as "out of the ordinary" anymore.

i read daily the RIM for LL , it is easy to read and seems to be well organized imho . with instructor comments and "the right call" . and since LL basically follows OBR , with a few minor exceptions here and there . the RIM can be useful at any level (except maybe NCAA) . i also have a FED rule book , tilted " 2010 high school rules simplified and illustrated " . i find this very helpful , because it uses illustrations to demonstrate FED rules , it is easy to read imho . and lastly i have the OBR which i dont read much . btw dont forget the greenbookrules.com , that has been mentioned in the past , on this blog .

Same here never naked, but I have been busted a number of times working some mechanics in front of the mirror.

For the next few hours I'll be scorned and mocked by the wife.

I also was doing a hammer strike in the car a few weeks ago at a stop light and thought she was asleep and got fussed at about how embarassing I am.

Rules by Topic is better, personally.

I usually don't read the rule book much in the off season. I might read it once a month, but probably not even that often. When the season comes back around, I pull out the new rulebooks and get to it.

I get the Fed manuals soon (I think!), so I'll read through the books at least once before the season begins.

As my sons keep telling me, NERD! :bang:

My Fiance gets me for this alot actually..........

As for me i put down once a month but like OP i keep one near by for times when i find myself in the 'think tank.' as the season gets closer how ever i pick it up to casual reading in between classes. :hi5:
