Toe Shot

Took a direct shot tonight on the TOP of my MU460 right where the met guard meets the toe plate. The pitch was at the most high 60's and it stung much more than I expected.

My toe is pretty stiff right now but I don't think it is broken. I will say I'm questioning how protective these shoes are now. I'd hate to think what would have happened with a pitch in the 80s.

I can't believe that the new MU460 are actually steel toed based on Welpe's story.

VERY glad I picked up a pair of 450s for $70

Toe is fine today but I have to say this shot was unnerving. If these are in fact steel toed shoes, the steel they use must not be very thick.

It seems New Balance went too far towards light weight with this model and the casualty is protection.

If the shoe is driven back into you toe, the material really doesn't make any difference. When the ball hits the front of the toe box, the shoe moves backwards, but your foot actually doesn't. Part of my locking in routine now involves pulling my feet back toward the heal of the shoes, ever so slightly, to get a bit of a gap so the shock isn't transferred directly. Just landing heal first, when planting my feet, has the same effect.

And for gosh sakes, make sure that big toe nail is cut back. That makes a HUGE difference.

Kyle it didn't hit the front, it hit the TOP right between the TOP of the toe box and the metatarsal guard. I've taken front shots and have felt nothing and there is enough room in my shoe that my toes aren't jammed up into the front of them.

I took a shot last weekend in my NB 450's, that hurt like... I hit the outside of the shoe between the toe box and the met gaurd. I was not expecting to feel as much pain as i did.

I can tell you the NB's are not steel toed. I just sent back my 2nd pair for ripping along the stitching on the toe area. The toe is plastic.

I know that my first pair of NB's did have a steel toe. I was banging the soles together, knocking dirt out, and I totally ripped the seam out. Steel toe cover came flying out. These were the old style after the first redesign. I would hate to think the new ones are not steel toed.

I have a feeling Reebok and NB are using composite material to save weight, hence the reason the Reeboks and the 460s are so light.

I personally went out and bought a very nice pair of low cut steel toe work shoes (CSA green tag). I have the hanging pads on the bottom of my shin pads so that when i lock in with both my arms in my box stance the pad is covering the top of my foot the steel toe does the rest, have never had an ouchie on my foot since

I saw the NB 460's in person for the first time last weekend, those things are FUGLY!!!

I mean my 450s are nothing that will hang in the Louve. but they've definitley taken a step backwards in the looks department. It's as if they're intentionally trying to make them uglier.

I don't find the Reeboks that attractive, either.

The old +POS low tops are still the best looking plate shoes to date, IMO. Plus, there's no doubt they're all steel. I just picked up a new pair for a steal, and will use them when I work four man.

i was just going to say. remember +POS. not sure what happened to the owner but his son is still running the biz. on there site he is advertising the old style plate shoes for sale. this is new be ause i've been trying to find a pair. i've got a call in to find out about the sizing. i wear a 4E in NB. hope he can deliver. $100 for the pair. they have a steel toe with a metatarsel plate made of ABS.

Not trying to say I told you so...but...I've reported this twice.

I am on my 3rd pair. I had to send the first 2 pairs back because of the stitching ripping underneath the metatarsal plate. Before I sent them back I felt inside of them and the toe appears to be a hard plastic, not steel. zm1283 saw my first pair before I sent them back and can confirm this, too.

Having said that, if I can get a pair that won't rip on me, they are a great shoe and I would recommend them. If they continue to rip on me, then I guess I'll hold out hope that Reebok will come out with all black high top Zigs before next year. I don't mind white on my shoes, but the white on the Zigs are beyond too much.

I wore NB all season, and took a lot of shots without one I could feel. I felt a bit invincible until one hurt one day. I was surprised and upset because the ball hit right on the point of the steel toe. After the game, I realized that the problem was my toenails needed a trim.

Two things:

1. Reebok Plate Shoes, Mid height: I took a toe/front edge of metarsal plate shot last night. I felt nothing but pressure. No pain, light mark on spot where ball hit. I'm satisfied with the protection and comfort.

2. Reebok Zigs. I tried some on and loved the comfort level but I need/must have mid-level to high ankle support due to some ankle injuries and weak tendons. I saw some Reebok Zig Classic Cliffhangers on the Reebok Site. http://shop.reebok.com/US/product?modelId=EF520&articleId=J82860

Technically, they are boots but they are high ankle support, Zig sole technology and all black, leather upper. They would work well as base shoes in my opinion. I am tempted to try them. Would love to see them in hand before buying but haven't seen them in any stores I shop in.
