I have to say, that even though I'm a Phillies fan, I don't think he's out of the box.

If you look at the 32 second mark, the front foot is well outside the lines, but it is in the air when he makes contact. The heel of the left foot is close enough, that I don't think you can call him for that one being out of the box, so I think this is a good call.

That said, watching it live I thought he should have been called out for sure

Only 1 foot needs to be completely out of the box so....... out!

I can't say for sure that his back foot is entirely out of the box. As for his front foot, it looks to me that it's off the ground when he hits the ball.

6.06 A Batter is out for illegal action when-

(a) He hits a ball with one or both feet on the ground entirely outside the batter's box...

(emphasis mine)

Good point. I doubt that that was the explanation given to Manuel, but who knows?

without replay, ...there's no way anyone can determine his front foot is 'off the ground' when contact is made ...........

True. Most of the time being out of the box is also not as obvious and certainly not one of the thinga the plate guy is actively looking for.

If he's that far up (and out) - the plate umpire should easily have seen that.

I have an out.

Anybody hear the dumbass announcer say the only one with a look would be the third base umpire? Actually the U1 has the look, he has the batter against the foul line.
