Worked 6 games yesterday, last 3 were back-to-back-to-back. 1st game of the day, 13u rep. Early in the game my partner, BU makes a couple of 'non-verbal/physical' safe calls on the bags because the fielder caught the throw but never applied a tag to the runner. Between innings the losing HC comes out and tells us that "he knows it's early and we're tired but we need to show more enthusiasm on the field". This was mainly directed at my partner but we both laughed it off as we thought it was a rather silly comment. 5th inning, 8-0 game. Catcher for losing team is setting up outside on just about every pitch, plus whenever he catches the ball he does a brutally obvious frame job. So I"m balling the pitcher each pitch and then this happens

Rat: COME' ON CALL SOME STRIKES

Me: Everything's outside coach

Rat: Ahh BRUTAL, BRUTAL

Me: I don't want to hear it coach

Rat: I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR

Me: Ok, You're Gone

Rat: Oh Yeah, WHY WOULD I WANNA STAY HERE ANYWAY?

Me: Let's Go You're Done

Well, can't argue with you there - this would certainly be an easy one.

But I've got to ask.... SIX GAMES?!?

Why? :rollinglaugh:

Personally, with my warped sense of humour, this coach needs to work harder for this ejection in this case.

8-0 in the 5th...pretty obvious he wants to go home early because it's too painful to watch. To me, what's a greater punishment: being forced to sit there and watch the rest of the game, or being able to go home early?

For the record, instead of saying "I don't want to hear it." I would've said something to the effect of "knock it off" or "that's enough"

My partner said the same thing after, that it would have been better to let him talk himself out and realize how stupid he is sounding, but I've had 4 EJ's stolen from me recently, this was a gift and I took it :rollinglaugh:

Easy dump! A no brainer, but COULD have been more fun keeping him in it! :D

Brian, ..I did 6 games a few weeks back, ...it's not that bad as long as you're prepared ;)

Good toss. Personally, this season I've tried not to respond with things like "coach, those were all outside" when a coach is griping. Instead I use the standard, "Dave, we aren't going to talk about balls and strikes today." For me, if you talk about a pitch location, you are kind of inviting the coach to give you where he thinks it was. The obvious exception is if he asks where it was - then I'll tell him. Still, nothing you did wrong here - just a new trick I've been using.

I made the mistake of answering an asst coach who asked where a pitch was,(I know, I know, but this was my first year in 15, so give me a break :o ) ..AND ..he did it twice!! There wasn't a peep from the team the whole game and they were getting pounded, but....I gave a 'time' hand to the pitcher, he sees me and steps off, and I look at him with my mask on and say ...."outside,...WAY outside, now, no more questions, please!" .......reply ......"ok, sorry" and then I hear the head coach say to the asst, ... "Jim...knock it off!!"

When you say that you aren't discussing balls and strikes, leave off the today, you don't ever discuss balls and strikes.

As far as your partner getting called unenthusiastic, if it is a no brainer I never verbalize.

On a pick, if he doesn't try to tag him I show nothing, If he half tags or he is back in plenty I show safe with an easy safe. If it is a real pick then I give it a bigger safe.

The same with a call at a base. If there is no tag or the out is by steps then I just show the signal. I step it up the closer it is.

How does a EJ get stolen form you?

Not going to argue your ejection, but this statement makes it sound like your hunting for them.

I'm not hunting for them in the slightest. I have 2 EJ's in 5 years of umpiring. Regarding them being stolen, I'm BU, Rat comes out to argue my call and the PU tosses him, this happened 3 times in 1 game btw.

So you have gone from 2 EJ in 5 years to possibly 6 with 3 in one game? Has something happen to make you irritable recently? :o

What does rep mean? I have seen it in a couple of posts and I don't know what it stands for.

In Canada there are 4 levels of baseball : House League, Select, Rep, Elite

It just refers to the level of competition

Canadian Level vs American

House League = Little League Spring

Select = small American Legion, Little League summer etc.

Rep = High School and good summer club teams. Rep ball in Canada consist of various levels based on the size of the city, same as HS in the US.

Elite = Pro/College prospect ball.

For someone born in the 1990's you think you'd be able to ditch the old guy vocabulary.hhaha

For me, sometimes the stop sign is good enough. No words are needed often and coaches though they are on thin ice in 40 degree ( 104 F for you Americanos who refuse to join the rest of the world and go metric haha)

I think I may have got him when he came out the first time. I'm not letting him tell me I need to wake up. Maybe I'm a hardass but I don't want to hear it. I don't tell you how to be a rat don't tell me how to be an ump.

For a coach, " I DON'T CARE WHAT YOU WANT TO HEAR", means, "Please good sir,  I no longer wish to be coaching today. Please relieve me." :(

It would be my pleasure to oblige

Indeed it is, but there also is one from 2008  on the 1st page.

If you don't want to read the older threads then don't read them.  I found that a lot of the older posts are interesting and actually help me learn how to become a better umpire by reading and replying to the comments made by the many fine umpires here and getting their input on the situations they have faced and have them evaluate the situations I have faced. I realize that I'm not perfect and am still young compared to you but I feel that the many forums and posts here old and new may help me become a better umpire in the future as I grow in my career and help those coming behind me.

I will continue to reply to posts as I see fit.

Reading old threads as a new member is a great way to gather a ton of information in a short period of time.  I did the same when I joined here a couple of years ago.  Adding to those old threads rarely gets new conversations going on them, however.

Can only speak for myself, but having these old threads re-hashed crowds the "View New Content" page with a bunch of old stuff and is a bit of an inconvenience.  It's not a big deal, but just know that when you post on old threads, it can make it more difficult for other members to easily browse new posts or threads if they use  "View New Content" functionality to do so.

BTW, I am originally from Leawood and my grandparents, aunt and uncle lived in Olathe (my aunt still does).  My brother lives in OP not too far from there too.  I graduated from Shawnee Mission South and KU.

But like Greyhawk said it is just a minor inconvenience for most of us. My suggestions is if you see something you like then start a new related thread. You are likely to get less sarcastic remarks from idiots like me. But you do what you want. It's all good.

I don't mind adding to old posts if you are adding or questioning something. However, sometimes it is easier to start a new thread. Choose whichever you think works best in each case.
