While me and my partner were getting ready for our game tonight, we were talking about a game that he did that got protested. I asked him what the coach was protesting, he said a fair/foul call. I asked what happened and he told me. The batter hit a ball up 1st base line. The ball hit the bag and bounded into foul ground. I told him it was a fair ball, it hit the bag and went foul, so its fair because it touched the base first. He said he called it foul cause its a Dixie rule. I can't find it any where and I don't understand why in the hell Dixie would change that (i doubt they would, but it is Dixie).... Am I missing something here, or is my partner misinformed?

You're partner has been hitting the crack pipe too hard. Tell him to stop loading such huge rocks. :rock

I'd love to know the league in which a batted ball that hits a base is foul.

Calvinball but only on the third Tuesday of the month when the moon is a waxing crescent.

Bags are in fair territory how in the hell could that be foul? Maybe he said "it's Dixie's rule" Dixie being the 87 year old crack head that made up the rule 30 years ago when she was running the concession stand.

I find it funny that a coach is protesting a fair/foul call which is umpire judgement.

Then again, if the ump admits that the ball did indeed hit the bag first and then go foul, it's not really judgment at question but rather application and misinterpretation of the rule in applying that judgment.

What I thought was odd was that he thought if it hit the bag and went foul it was foul... I corrected him on it, so he's good now.

What, is he brand new?

Brand new at smoking crack maybe?

I thought anyone who has seen more then 3 baseball games in their life knew the ball hitting the bag is fair.

But then again I had a 6 yr guy the other day arguing me that if the ball bounced down the line, over the bag then into foul Territory its foul. This same guy called infield fly TWICED in the same game with runners on first amd third! The second time the kid dropped it. Wowsa. I think hes new to smoking crack as well. But im from eastern ky, so it was probably oxycontin.

I'll have to remember that rule!

Just remember if hits the pitcher's plate, bounds foul between 3rd or 1st baste and home plate then comes to a stop or touches an object or player in foul territory the ball is foul.

I agree with Rich, this seems like a perfectly good protest. If I were that coach, I'd expect to have the protest at least evaluated. Hell, it might be the only thing that kept him from killing the ump who made such an inexcusable mistake.

The only way I can see it being thrown out is 1) It wasn't lodged properly or 2) The committee determined it was a judgment call (wrongly) and tossed it out summarily.

Justified?

Yup. I love the way Quarrels got "disarmed."

The protest was thrown out because they waited til two days after the game to file it. Also, his team is in first with no real chance of losing it, so there is no point in replaying the game. The running joke when he plays is he tells the umpires at the plate meeting that he's playing this game under protest. He tried to pull that on me Saturday, told him that's enough and we didn't hear a peep from him the whole game. Just can't wait til the district tournament when he pulls this and gets tossed.

I am SO using this if I ever go into coaching! Classic! Hey Rich, you should start all your plate meetings with that one! :)
