You would be surprised with the number of coaches that will call an assignor and tell the assignor the ball hit the bag and the umpire called it foul. Of course they conveniently leave out the fact they are playing with safety bases and the ball hit the orange part. I guess an umpire that called the orange fair, could call up an assignor to complain about a coach and conveniently forget to say that safety bases were being used.

Get some assignors (current or former) on here to give some of the stories they have heard, as they are the first call for the complaint department.

I did a 9/10 game the other week and the ball was coming down the line and ithit the bag. The problem was they were using safety bags and the F3 stepped in front of me right as it hit the bag. It's really the PU's call but he looks at me like an idiot. I looked at him and signaled I had nothing. He still looked at me to make the call. I went in to him and told him it hit the bag but I couldn't tell if it was all white, all orange or half and half. He said half and half, I told him it was fair then.

I think if the ball hits the bag that its the base umpires call but maybe I'm misunderstanding what your saying.

Around here, it is usually the PUs call.

The proper mechanic is that up until it hits or passes the base, it's the PU call. After it touches or passes the base it becomes the BU call. So, it was the BU call all the way. Still, when the PU saw that you had no clue due to F3 getting in the way, he should have sang out the call.
