Thunderheads:

I have a pair of the Honigs K20's. I typically wear them when I wear my Douglas CP. They protect well and are very light. The biggest advantage I liked was I could order them in a 16" length so they fit me well with the NB450's . I beleive that they have a good range of sizes. The other model of SG that I had was just too long and they would move around no matter how I adjusted or tightened them The padding (closed cell foam) inside is maybe not as comforatble as my WV Platinum/Charcoal (open cell foam and nylon lined). However the K20's are cooler and a bit less bulky. I bought mine this spring and have worn them for probably 10 games.

I have the older model bought on close out.

I have them, took a direct shot from the pitcher in a 12u travel tournament this past weekend and it hurt for about 10-15 seconds and I first thought it completely missed the shinguard for some reason but it didn't it hit dead center and I was completely back to normal after 30 seconds, that was the only slightly painful experience in these and wanted to kill the catcher for completely missing that inside low ball that didn't even bounce. Also I have taken about 10 bats to the shinguard's this season and never really felt the bats so they did their job, now if only we could get catchers to do their job.

On these shinguard's how are you supposed to wear them? Both buckles inside? I never quite figured out how to properly wear them. :rock

Jeff,

I use K-20's, and I'm very happy with them.

Great protection - I have never felt any pain after taking a shot off them, and I've taken some wicked shots off of them. Reasonably light weight and comfortable to wear.

When I first got them, I had some trouble getting the straps adjusted right so they wouldn't "slide" on me when I had to "bust out" from behind the plate. Once I got them adjusted right, not an issue.

I wear the NB 450 plate shoes, so I removed the "instep protector" flap, and I just tuck the "ankle wings" under the metatarsal plate on the 450's when I put them on.

It's all in the padding! The plates and gap coverage are pretty good on all the major brands, including Honig's K-20. But Wilson Golds have the best padding. (The Golds also have the best knee coverage.) I also have a pair of West Vest by Douglas shins, which are outstanding (and light), but the Golds cover better and have thicker padding.

The average high school, PONY and mid-and-lower-level MSBL games (where they bring it at 85 and under): Douglas WV shins (and Douglas CP)

The above average high school, JUCO, summer leagues, scout leagues, college intrasquad, etc. (where they bring it from 85 and over---sometimes way over): Wilson Gold (and Gold CP), period.

The K-20s—the new K-20s—have much-improved padding similar to the Golds, but not as thick.

I know the K-20s are a little lighter, too. If you're going to go for a Honig's, get nothing less than the new K-20s. (I know they call Honig's K-10s "Collegiate," but I wouldn't wear those for PONY. I wore them at a clinic, and they suck.)

Finn: There aren't "new k-20s" The new shins by Honig are revamps of the k-30, I think ...regardless. They are blowing out the k-20 at a great price, so thus my inquiry.

ON EDIT: Finn, looking again, ...both the K20's and K30's are going away. The new K2010 are a combo, double knee w/ optional triple knee extentions. So, they are NEW k20s without, and NEW k30s with. My bad, sorry......

Thanks for all who've responded!

I would suggest that if you felt anything, especially at the 12u level to try something different. Last Saturday in a Sr. Legion game I had a guy who had some pretty good velocity hit me dead square in the front of the shin and I did not the slightest discomfort. Of course I felt the impact but absolutely no discomfort. The ball actually rebounded bact to the pitcher, that's how hard the throw was. Between innings I checked my pants around where it hit to make sure they didn't tear.

As for which way to buckle your shins, I've been told time and again to buckle them on the outside like catchers should/do so they will be less likely to hit each other when running and come undone. I really don't think it matters for umpires. the pants should basically prevent this.

I have the K20's and wear them for everything.. HS all the way to DI and independent ball.. yes those guy throw mid 90's..and yes I have been hit.. didnt feel a thing.. I like that they are light, I tried on the Wilson west vest shin guards, but they were so big and bulky..so i didn't buy them.. I will always wear my K20's..

I purchased the k2010 for this season and I don't care for them...they are bulky, hard to run in, bullet proof, offer great protection at the ankle and sides of the leg...did I mention they are bulky...the knee cap protrudes out away from your leg and the ankle flaps, while armored, tend to flip or wing out away from my ankle...I use NB450 plates so it may have something to do with the high top design of the shoe. They are close to being great shins but they need some refining...on the plus side, I have taken shots to the knee that were untouched and did not feel a thing...just a loud thump and catch asking if it hit me :HS then asking where is the ball? Pitcher has it B) 'cause that is how far it rebounded off of me.
