you wear work boots behind the plate.

you call "Fair Ball!"

you wear Dickies rather than umpire pants.

you wear a ball bag on the bases.

you have your cap turned around when behind the plate.

you use a "clicker" as the base guy.

your ball bag is made of leather .

Uses a paintbrush for a plate brush.

I was at a tournament and thought I saw the PU using a paintbrush, but wasn't sure. Later b/t some of my games on a trip to the concession stand I walked behind his back stop and saw it in his back pocket it was definately a well used paintbrush with all sorts of paint spatterings. But, I must say the guy had strong mechanics.

That does help

I know a guy that uses a shoe brush to clean the plate. In three easy sweeps, it is clean.

And he can keep the shine on his plate shoes the whole game, too...Genius:rolleyes:

As the PU I saw it necessary to go sweep the rubber once or twice between innings. Those pitchers that aren't really sure of themselves like to chill really close to the rubber to think for a second, and when it was covered over in dirt I couldn't see if they were on the rubber or not. It's probably "smitty" to do, but it's better than sweeping it off with my foot.

I actually saw this once.....

If the base guy uses a brush to knock dirt off the rubber and the bags.

Hey all,

I think that it might be necessary base a base ump to carry a plate brush if you do a game with break away bases. Never for use on a pitching rubber! (If in doubt, make a call and the pitcher will keep it very clean!)

This is actually a mechanic in high school softball here in Alabama. I couldn't believe it when I saw it.:confused:

THEN, I had a partner do it in between every inning during a varsity game, AND HE CALLS COLLEGE BALL AS WELL!!!!!:P:eek:

You might be a Smitty if.............

---as the BU you go talk to the home plate umpire every freakin' half inning like he's got gold in his cup :GL:

--on a slide and tag play at home plate you say "Show me the ball" and when the catcher shows you the ball you say "SAFE!" :)

Smitty....

...wears white socks. (no joke)

...wears those big mirror-reflective sunglasses on the bases. (looks like a 'biker from the '60s.)

... has a pony tail. :GL:

K3, you did NOT see someone do this!? That's classic. This post makes my day!

I know I've done stupid things - I admit I used to yell "foul!" too much (as in JayR's post). My biggest Smitty move was one of my first games (Zero training) which my wife still makes fun of me about: WAY oversold a play at the plate. Drummond style. Oh, man I still laugh at myself.

Smitty out.

I haven't seen that but I had a PU ask me if the F3 pulled his foot. I told him no and then he called him safe. :GL:

This past season was my rookie season. I did a lot of LL majors. At first I was flipping my hat around because I had a regular hat and didn't have a clue about a combo hat.

The field I called on was right beside the senior field. One game there was an old timer on the senior field and I was cruising on the major field when in between innings I heard him shout out " Hey blue, don't flip your hat around it's improper ". I was like WTF, although he was right I was pissed.

Anyway, I called my boss and told him and he wasn't happy about him shouting out like that but he told me about the combo hats so I ordered one. When it got there it was a beanie. I had ordered the wrong thing.

Next game I had the plate and was looking at this thing and thinking no way when the same guy walks up and says " nice hat ". I said " Yeah, but no way I'm wearing it". So I gave it to him and flipped my hat around for a few more games until I could get the hat I wanted.

No offense to anyone who does wear a beanie, but it was just not my style.

NOOOOOOoooooo!! Dude, You're killing me!!

Let me try that again, BU asks me if F3 pulled, I told him no and he calls him safe.

Well, the thought did occur to me that things were a little turned around but, the premise is still the same. Delightful.

I have posted this elsewhere as it is a good thing there are no photos of me umpiring in the rural south in the '80s......my adjustable hat, polyester coaches shorts and t-shirt (all association issued) would be a howl for all of you......

I therefore claim I am an acceptable judge of what is smitty.......since clearly I was one..... :GL:

Now that being said....we all have to start somewhere...the only time you get a pass is when you are first starting out........once you see the differences or are told about it.....and continue to do it.....then the smitty tag fits.....

I think it was Mike Taylor who said once in a post.....if it comes down to you or the world....bet on the world.

Rookie season..........enough said....you get a pass.........next year, not as much.....

As to beanies.........although they have fallen out of favor in recent years, yet at one time they were not only acceptable, but prescribed by many associations for plate work.....Now that it is common acceptance to wear a "fitted hat bill forward".....beanies are now uncommon........I believe only one MLB umpire continues to wear a beanie...

However........IMHO.....on the smitty scale ......wearing your hat backwards is far more smitty than wearing a beanie.......

:GL: (next year)
