I'm a young umpire, 16, and I am umpiring district games for Little League. I have the official hat, and shirt. But, we were not provided with pants and most of the pants don't even fit me as I have a really small waist size. Plus, they're really expensive.

The Chief Umpire of the district says he doesn't really care what we wear, but I want to look presentable.

I have two questions. First, I have a game tonight and my options of what to wear a basically tan dockers or khaki shorts or jeans. What should I wear tonight.

Also, are there any good alternatives to the expensive umpire pants that I could purchase for the long run?

Post your waist size. I give away lots of stuff to young umpires, and I know other guys on here do, too.

As far as alternatives, I think personally I'd go with the shorts or slacks instead of jeans.

Good luck with your game!

First off, I have worn a pair that were 2 inches too big so the sizing shouldn't be an issue. I wear a 30 so I am as small as anyone.

Secondly, I would get the official pants.

I will probable get flamed for this, but in a pinch, you might be able to find some grey slacks at a department store. My local Academy Sports store had a few pair also.

Just a suggestion til you can get some official pants.

No good options for tonight. Definitely no shorts. No real preference between the khakis or the jeans. My advice would be, as soon as you can, go to Walmart and get you a pair of gray dress pants. They'll last you for at least a few games and you can probably pick them up for $15 or so. These are not ideal, but it's better than your other options...

By the way, enjoy your first game!

To look APPROPRIATE, I agree with ukce above ....

NO CUFFS, pleated .....should do the trick for a while. BLACK BELT, widest you have .......

I don't understand how you're doing a LL district game and you don't have pants to wear:HS

Because some districts are so desperate, they'll take anyone... This is how I started last year. Went to a District clinic right before TOC, thinking I would start umpiring in fall ball for my local league. Instead, they begged me to do district games immediately. I ended up getting assigned every night that I was available. I still feel bad about how terrible I must have been...

Thanks!

But make sure the pants you get can fit the belt your'e going to order ....AND ....from experience ......

if you are a 28 or 29, ORDER A 32 belt! Trust me!! AT LEAST one size higher than you would normally!

I'm a 36, so you usually order a 38 for a belt, right? I had to send it back and get a 40 and it JUST makes it ...so they are cut small!:wow:

When I first started I used Walmart pants.

Buy real pants when you can. Looking professional is a must. People will respect you more. ( At leat for a couple of innings) :wow:

I would also recommend getting a good pair of official umpire slacks as soon as you can.

For the short term, there are two options you can use to possibly get out fitted for tonight. Sears usually carries flat front polyester slacks in heather and charcoal grey. Usually they are around 20 dollars. Make sure they are the style with no cuffs! We use these for some of our Jr. umpires when spending $50-$80 on pants is not smart for a kid who will probably grow out of them in a few months. The other option is JC penny they also have some slacks that can be used.

Here are a few examples from Sears:

is pleated the only way to go? the reason I ask is because I just got a pair of Honigs combos (yes, I know... rookie) and they are huge in the front. I wear a 30" waist and I could easily hide an extra ball bag and 3-4 baseball between my cup and the zipper area. do base pants have a normal front (like a pair of slacks) I've seen the flat front western style pants but was not sure about them. what do you all think? Thanks, 1

If you don't have pleated pants, bust out the iron and make them appear pleated!

got it, pleated. but do the base pants wear smaller in the crotch area than combos? I know it is completely smittyish to wear combos and even more to wear base pants on the dish. but at 5-9 and 135 the combos or plate pants look worse than MC Hammers pants did. I can easily fit my leg gaurds under base pants with only other umps knowing the difference. 1

All my pants are Combo pants.

When you work 2,3,4 games a day and are switching off with your partner it makes it much easier.

For the belt, I'd recommend www.postaluniform.com. Get the 1 3/4" belt. At $8.75 (shipping included) it's going to be cheaper than any other belt you can find and I've been very happy with mine.

I bought several of these and they're the same as the belt that normally sells for $18-$22. I now have a belt in every pair of slacks I own and one in each gear bag. :)

Solid idea... I've forgotten my belt a few times when I pack up the night before and have a game right after work. Luckily the belt I wear at work is a 1 1/2" black belt, so it looks fine, but this is a good idea...

The districts get desperate because their umpire programs are lacking to begin with.

In our district you do so many volunteer hours before you accept pay. Then you will work TOC and All Stars as a volunteer.

Oh, you can't work one day a week for TOC or All Star now. Thank you, but do not bother coming back next year to work for pay.

The good umpires are assigned as crew chiefs and the championship games so hard work pays off.

We also have Jr umpires who can not afford regular umpire pants. Gray slacks from WalMart are fine. We had one this year working real hard. We chipped in and ordered him a pair of Smitty Charcoal Grey from Ump_Attire.

Good luck and hopefully they are not throwing you to the wolves.

Thank you so much for wanting to present a professional image! That alone tells me so much about your committment to umpiring. It's outstanding to see in such a young umpire.

You most certainly can purchase some off the rack pants at a local store that will fulfill the requirements for the near future.....

Because it matters to you, you will most definately feel, and people will see, a more confident and professional umpire on the field.

I wish many of my umpires felt the way you do......so to that end .....at the end of the season, contact me here........and I will be honored to buy you a pair of official umpire pants.........

My only requiremnt is that someday you return the favor to some other young umpire.

Best of luck in your tourney season.......

my son bought a pair of light grey and dark grey slacks at Walmart, were $12.99 a pair, notr quite "heather grey" or "charcoal grey" but close, and great for the level he's doing as opposed to the $50. + slacks

First I'm a huge cheap skate. I'm a huge fan of Clark Howard. I am all for being cheap and my wife will tell you what she considers some horror stories, but I consider victories.

I understand Hell-MartWal-Mart pants are inexpensive and can work well in some situations like youth rec ball. But I was given some sage advice from Ump81 several years ago when he was evaluating me. At the time I was using a old ribbed +POS CP (I scored for free), combo pants, combo shoes. He told me something to the effect of, "Your becomming a pretty good umpire, but if you want to advance and be taken seriously you need to invest in yourself. There is nothing wrong with the way you look and your equipment, but you can look better and upgrade your CP and look like you take umpiring as serious I know you do."

That stuck to me and I then ordered my Gold, base pants, plate pants and the like because I want to be taken as seriously as I take umpiring.
