ya no need to give time in this situation..... it does provide a benefit to the defense....same goes for players calling time after a pick off play, if the defensive player still has the ball in the vicinity I'll give the runner time to allow him to get up and gather himself.... if the ball has already gone back to the pithcer generally I'll just tell them to get up... have had coaches whine about it before, simply tell them what was said above... this isn't LL... some times I will ask them why they need it, by the time they answer they are usually up.

I suppose if I had to chose, I think 3 man works really well long as everyone is where they are supposed to be. we work 4 man on our higher age championship games (and semi's if we have the bodies) and I always enjoy it.

my dad always said 2 things when he trained me... 1. if you miss the call you'd better damned well be there... and 2. "loud and proud"... will save you a lot of chirping from the bench/stands

we don't have very many of them (pics) but there's a group of photographers locally who shoot all the teams in the tournaments at one of the complex's I work at regularly, this pic was my father's day gift from them. This was taken after we'd worked games on seperate field's, they happened to find us loitering outside the concession stand. Later that day we became the first father son duo to work a game at this complex... not a big deal, but kinda neat

see that's the thing.... your not psychic, and no one expects you to be, so unless your absolutely sure I don't think running the coach or F2 would be a good idea, you could have certainly run the pitcher, a lot of times their body language will give you a clue about intent.

spose you could have ran all three if you watched it all progress and knew what was said, at the very least you could have run the pitcher, but this happens, I wouldn't worry about it

so my son, who I've mentioned on here a few times, is in the field next to our house playing football with some neighborhood kids and his little brother who turns 13 in 2 days. Anyhow, I'm watching them sitting there in my lounge chair, and one of the kids yells "time out", so my son the umpire, not thinking about it, puts up his right hand and says "we got time" LMAO had us all rollin, he didn't realize it for a minute then just shook his head

I've seen umpires who wear bags that match the shirt color, if their uniforms are pressed and creased it does look good. I always go with the same color as my slacks, that works for me. I also have no trouble with patent leather shoes and belts, again, if the uniform looks good they add a nice touch to it. I don't use them, but again, if the guy takes pride in his uniform you can tell, and it looks fine. this is of course my opinion. if your shirt has white in the trim, or is white, then a white T-shirt is fine. I tend to wear Black under the cream shirt, and whatever the trim color of the shirt I have on is. I do have a number of colors shirt wise, so as you can imagine there are a lot of possible combinations. I get bored with the basics, very simply. Like to add some color to the uniform. The dork comment didn't read to me as a joke, sorry, maybe it's how I read it. If I misread your intent then you certainly have my apology

ball bags don't have to be black, it's preference, and sorry, the colored bags do look good with a nicely pressed uniform. I use charcoal bags with my charcoal slacks, heather bags with heather slacks etc. I ALWAYS use two bags. using the hook means he likes to be organized, and nothing else (no I don't use one). A lot of people use the 1" brim on their hat, especially the older umpires I've worked with. Your brim size doesn't effect your ability to umpire positively or negatively, again, it's preference. I use a Shock FX, and wear skull caps umderneath... am I a dork to? Not sure you want to be insulting people.

oh ya, and compression tights, she reminded me... 3 pair of those, can fill up my back seat with T-shirts of all kinds and colors..... a laundry basket in the back full of over the calf black socks....... now when she sees me whip out the credit card it's like an intervention

that's exactly what they do, wrap around the neck, and wrist... LOL I'm ok with losing the earings if a coach has a problem with them, then ok, sure.... generally we'll ask at the pre game as far as the baseball vendor stuff... other jewelry has to go ofcourse

I work a TON of games at a complex in Central Illinois, almost 150 games last season, and will reach close to that number this season probably.... and no matter what, they ALWAYS have our backs... the UIC will be on the field within minutes to escort an unruly coach off the field if he doesn'r leave immediatly, the tourny staff will pretty much say "the umpire ran you... bye". Now, these teams pay A LOT of money to play here, but it's baseball, and the umpires have the game from the first pitch to the last pitch, the tourny staff NEVER interfere's with that It's nice to have that kind of support

by the way, these were 16-17 yr old players... not that it matters

anyhow, i'm PU tonight, my partner dumps a coach who argued a balk situation with him after some exchange between the two, pitcher stepped off the back of the rubber, R2 was moving to 3rd base, and got gunned by a week.... Manager had a cow, said the kid balked... he didn't... anyhow, they come into the field after that 3rd out... pitcher (who got got gunned at 3rd) throws a pitch in tight, I ball it, another one, curveball, close, but misses slightly high, rolls his eyes gives me the googly eyes etc... I blow it off (ok so I'm in a good mood tonight), ... next pitch, he plunks the hitter.... I saw the look in his eye.... he knows that I know etc etc... I dump him... now here's what shocked me slightly.... coach raises hell (different coach from who got dumped in previous inning)... not all over the kid for bad sportsmanship... the kid just let one get loose, no way he did it purposely... because, umm... he's a REALLY good kid... ya ya ya (mind you, the kid knew I cold busted him, walked off without a complaint, at this point.. they were down like 11 anyhow and he got shelled in the two previous innings) This coach could care less about the obvious bad sportsmanship... that EVERYONE in the complex saw and knew exactly what went on, he was pissed because I ran the kid for "no good reason". after all these years I'm still amazed that parent's let their kids play for these clowns.

the reason these things are generally forbidden is because they can provide a distraction, much like a white undershirt sleeve, batting glove etc. I suppose there are scenario's where these things could be considered unsafe, allthough to be perfectly honest, any scenario like that currently escapes me

if the complex staff doesn't have the umpire's backs I sure as hell wouldn't work for them

My wife gets bent out of shape everytime she see's me on a umpire website looking at gear... now it's "your taking me shopping to"...... I have 3 sets of plate gear (helps on the 15 game weekends, I hate wet gear) 2 powder, 2 navy, 4 black, 2 red w/ navy trim, 2 red w/ black trim, 3 maroon, 2 brown, 4 white with navy/red trim, 2 white w/ black trim, 2 grey, 2 sage green (got here today), 3 cream, like 12 clickers, 4 plate brushes, 4 belts (two patent, 2 flat), 1 nike cloth baseball belt, reebok field magistrate plate and base, New Balance plate and base... like 8 heather slacks, 4 charcoal slacks... she's ready to kill me anytime she see's me on one of the websites.

as a matter of fact, not only are they safer than for example, a gold or metal necklace, as they are generally wrapped in a cloth material or leather, or wound leather, they are much less distracting as they aren't the least bit shiny, a lot of players have them, and they seem to not cause a problem.(now, I will ask pitchers to remove them if they are not the same color of the uniform jersey, a bright color, or dangling lower than usual to where they move considerably)
