I should know this, but for some reason it is tripping me up. NFHS R1, BR hits grounder to f4, f4 tries to tag r1, then overthrows first base and the ball goes out of play. Would it technically be 2 bases from the time of the throw, or from the time of the pitch? Does the attempted tag nullify the "first throw in the infield?"

Well, its about 2 hours until I start my first games of the weekend, in the rain/sleet/snow...gotta love field turf!

I had order 7205. I ordered a Smitty Navy XL shirt, a Dalco Powder XL shirt, 3 indicators, a 36 Smitty combo (I know I know...but I work at a complex that doesnt give us much time to change) a 36 Smitty base, and a belt. I received a refund for the powder shirt, and I received everything I was supposed to get today.

I've done maybe 15 softball games, the bulk of which were over a 3 day period in which it poured non stop. Because the complex I primarily work at is field turf, the games went on, but most of the umpires didn't show etc. so I was called it to work some games. I did a bunch of 10u, 12u and 14u, and it was interesting, but not my thing, although I did like the 75 minute drop dead time limit on the games.

Do you mean he lifts it up to pivot? So his foot is perpendicular to the rubber, then he lifts it up, turns his foot, and the foot comes down parallel to the rubber?

Hey, I had one day off! Actually, it was a season ending (or should I say two season ending) showcase tournaments. It was great baseball, and a lot of work, but we all had fun. And actually for the 10 bucks I paid for the dalco, it is a good back up shirt. The one smittys that he sent me was an even better deal at 10 bucks, but I guess I can live with the dalco.

I was one of the ones who received a dalcos instead of smittys. Unfortunately, due to the volume of games I worked over the last two and a half weeks (44 games in 15 days!) I had to use the Dalco shirts.

I worked about 30 indoor games this year. Started January 2nd and finished up in March. It was different, but a lot of fun, and very relaxed.

The catcher didn't move his glove at all..and when I say high and outside, I mean it was thrown over the catcher's right shoulder and the catcher's glove was on his left side, inside on a right handed batter... I was really surprised by the situation because I really did not expect something like that to happen. The kids in these tournaments are usually very polite etc. as there are scouts all over the place...

I worked a game last night in a 18u showcase tournament. The players in this tournament are very skilled and definitely know what they are doing. I was the BU, and my partner (the PU) called an inside pitch that the pitcher thought was a strike, a ball. The pitcher gave him this look, and then the catcher came out to quickly talk to the pitcher. The next pitch came and the catcher stuck his glove up high and inside, and the pitch went high and outside, not touching the catcher at all and hit my partner directly in the chest. I try not to think that a pitcher would hit an umpire on purpose, but the circumstances surrounding him getting hit were a little off. My first thoughts were that if I were him, I would have ejected them both, but what would you guys do?

Doesn't the team at bat have the option of taking the balk or the result of the play? The umpire just calls "that's a balk," and lets the pitch continue, etc...?

I wrap up on the 15th or August, and I am looking forward to a couple of weeks off. Of course I start up again September 3rd.

I ordered 3 smittys shirts during the sale from sos...I received 1 smitty, and 2 dalco...I really didn't want the dalco, I am going to try and get them exchanged.

+1 It is amazing how many times the pitcher will go back to the rubber, and the coach will say "wait til' he puts the ball back in play," even though the ball was never dead.

I do a few games here and there for a complex that runs tournaments every weekend (I probably do 25 games there through out the year). This complex is strictly for profit, so all of the coaches, players, etc. are considered "customers." This of course leads to a very difficult problem, the coaches (and players) have a belief (which to some extent is true) that they can pretty much do whatever they want without fear of getting ejected. It seems that they can say whatever they want, and we have to just deal with it, or be "diplomatic" as the tournament director says. I have a hard time with this approach to the game. I am not one to eject, unless it is a safety issue, and I usually try to head problems off before they escalate, but lately I have been noticing that the coaches having been pushing the envelope more and more since they realize that they are basically immune. Even when they do get thrown out, they just sit in the stands and continue to coach because no one says anything. A few days ago, I was working a game as the BU, and the PU was getting it from the HC all game, and most of it was completely unwarranted. At one point there was a play involving a ball flying onto our field during a pitch, and the PU and I got together to discuss changing it to a no pitch (which was to the advantage of the HT). Well the whole time we were discussing (maybe 30 seconds) the HC kept trying to state his case to us and listen to our conversation. The PU kept telling him to get back, but he kept going. Finally after play was set to resume, I hear the word "JackA**" from the HC. I turned and called time and went to go talk to him. Now in HS that would have been an immediate ejection, but here, we have to keep the customers happy, so I go over to him and say that there is really no reason to get personal with the umpire, etc. Of course he says to me it is none of my business and I should worry about calling the game, not what he is saying. I politely tell him that when I can hear it, it is my business, and I send him to the bench, but I cannot throw him out, which means he still can basically do whatever he wants etc. This really frustrates me, because it is getting to the point where the coaches seem to do whatever they want. This problem is compounded by the fact that many of these coaches think they are coaching in the MLB because they are in a high level tourny. I usually do not have a problem because I do try to work things out, but there are sometimes when a coach goes to far and he needs to leave, but since they are customers, we have to deal with them. This seems to be a particular problem for young/new umpires, as they are getting eaten alive... I really don't have a question to this, but I just needed to get my frustrations out, because I really don't think the game should be about the coaches, and it seems like it is at this complex...
