I found out their are 1661 leagal BBCOR brands/makers that are being sold this year

This should speed things up for pre-game, unless you play here in North Dakota ,

Wood is the game.Love the short game!

but I also ump in Minnasota so I will need to read some bats, look at some pitchers.

How many other states are required to use wood?

You don't have to check bats and helmets before the game in FED games anymore. You don't need a list or anything else.

This irked me, but in the Virginia online rules meeting, they said that a coach can request at the plate meeting that we check the other team's equipment. I can see this happening if guys hate each other, meaning as soon as the request is made, we have to inspect.

At the annual rules interpretation meeting for FED umpires, the interrupter said that the proper way to respond to a coach's request to check the other teams gear is to say "Absolutely, right after I'm done checking yours. Please get your bats and helmets ready for inspection."

Our commissioner said we would, under no circumstances whatsoever, check all equipment before the game. If there was a question on a particular piece of equipment during the game, we are to check it when asked.

but you still gotta know them

Still have to know what? BBCOR bats have a stamp. If they have the stamp, they are legal.

This. What is the worry here? Look for a BBCOR stamp and be done with it.

This is an excerpt from a document I received from our district interpreter that you need to be aware of;

"On February 17, 2012, the NCAA informed us that they decertified the 33-inch Marucci CAT52 BBCOR bat. The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has adopted the NCAA’s ruling at the high school level. Effective immediately, the 33†Marucci CAT52 BBCOR bat will not be allowed for use in NCAA or NFHS baseball competition."

At our association meeting, we were told that if a coach requests this, tell both coaches to get their bats and bring 'em to home plate. Under no circumstances should we enter either dugout/bench.

Yeah, saw that make the rounds last week. Marucci released a statement saying they disagree with the NCAA's decision, however respect it. They believe that their bats are safe, but they accept the decision. They were offering trade ins or refunds for the bat in light of it.

The Cat-5 is a white baseball bat. Marucci makes a Black bat (called Black) and that is legal. Also, the Cat-5 is only illegal in the 33 inch version ONLY. All other lengths are good to go.

Yeah I read the longer bats were legal. I wonder what is up with the 33 inch Marucci Cat-5. Very odd to me, but I'm sure something in the production. I still haven't found exactly what happened with the testing. I just find it odd it is only that particular bat and length. Then again I'm no engineer or physicist.

Supposedly it has to do with the placing of the weight rings inside the bat or something. Not completely sure and that was all rumor.

However I do like the idea of "ok coach, I will do that just as soon as I am done checking yours first." Of course he will say "nevermind". Now the question do you continue with the requested search even though the coach that requested it has retracted his request or do you continue on?

Thanks. That would make sense. Something of that sort, distribution of weight would make sense and it would differ depending on length of course.

Haha. Hmm Interesting question. Once he asks does he lose any type of authority to ask? Wonder what the answer to that is. Though, it isn't really our job to inspect. And the fact that before the game, there is no penalty for having an illegal bat that is just sitting there...at least not until a batter enters the box with one (7-4-1a).

so you still hve to know it..even is its just one..

Still have to know what? Our state governing body sent a memo to all umpires and schools about the Marucci, so everyone knows it's not legal anymore. This isn't like last year where the teams were supposed to carry lists around all season.

That was told to us too, but not in that snarky of a way.

I don't understand the problem with groups checking when asked. If a coach asks, go check the bats. It is a very simple thing, wood/BBCOR legal, anything else illegal. You have to remember one white 33 in bat. I also don't understand why going in the dugout is a problem, we did it for years with no problem. If you want them to bring them to the dugout face, great, but to the plate, that's stupid. As I've said before, if a coach asks, go check them but expect the opposing coach to send you to the other dugout. I expect to get no requests but if I do, I will handle it. I also expect that most of the time a coach is just trying to get in another coach's head.

If the coach genuinely suspects an illegal bat, he should wait until the guy enters the box and then ask. That way he gets an out for the trouble.

If he doesn't like the other coach either, this would also get him riding the pine the rest of the game. What I was getting at is it could become a circus because now instead of doing it before the conference, they request it at the conference, making it a longer game for all of us.

but you still gotta know them

All Legal as long as they have a BBCOR .50 Stamp

Except the Marrucci Cat 5 33"

Not really, the pitcher still warms up after the conference. You certainly should be able to check the bats in that time. Most teams don't have more than 10 bats. Two umpires, five bats a piece, it will take longer to walk over than checking the bats.
