I am looking for a fitted umpire hat to wear underneath my new Diamond mask. I don't turn my hat around backwards to wear my mask and the bill is just a little bit too long and causes some pressure between my head the inside of the mask. So help me out here folks. I looked at the 59fifty MLB umpire hats that have the MLB logo on the front and I cant tell if the bill is actually a little shorter than the regular team hats. (hope that doesn't offend anyone that I want to wear one of those hats on the field seeing as how I am not a MLB Umpire) If you dont like it at least give me some alternatives or you can just yell out "flame on" in front of your PC and lemme have it. Don't worry, I have thick skin from umpiring in Knoxville.

It depends on where you found it. I have a MLB umpires hat and its an 8 stitch just like the normal team hands.

And if your looking for a hat to wear under your mask you can find them on umpire websites, they have them in all different bill sizes.

gonna have to dumb that down for me 'Chief. I have an idea of what you are talking about (the number of stitches under the bill) but help me out with the lingo.

Hats go by stitches.

If you look at the bill of your hat you can count the rows of stitching it has on it.

8 stitch - 8 rows of stitching Base Hat (Regular Bill)

4 and 6 - Plate Hats (Shorter Bills)

Hope that helps.

I prefer Richardson Flex Fits as my head is to big for a 6 n 7/8 and to small for a 7....lol

Personally, I use a 4 stitch behind the plate and an 8 stitch on the bases. If you go to the Ump-Attire link Warren posted, you'll find the 4 stitch hats under the Combo Umpire Caps and the 8 stitch hats under Base Umpire Caps. Personally, I would stay away from the Plate Umpire Caps.

As for the MLB logo, I would avoid that too... In my opinion, when you're calling a game, you're doing so as a representative of a certain league or association. You're not doing it as a representative of MLB. I know certain organizations forbid logos of other organizations (NCAA and Florida High School Athletics Assoc. being among them).

Try to get a 4 stitch fitted for the plate and an 8 stitch for the field, these can be ordered but be sure of the size, Stay away from the umpire caps, as stated before also know as Penis caps, Hahaha

If you are sporting the same Diamond feather weight mask that I wear, it is a very low profile. My :) get a Ritchardson's fitted beanie ,the tip down bill works better then a sun visor for the sunlights. My combo which is a Ritchardson's 6 stitch flex fit actually rubs and gets caught up on this "low profile" Diamond mask. I have given it a try, I will not wear it behind the plate any more. Many will disagree with me but... beanies rule on the plate!

purely, IMHO

I have a Diamond feather weight as well and I have no problem wearing my 4 stitch hat with it. I could see a 6 stitch being a little difficult, but 4 is fine.

If you remove your mask properly, a six-stitch can even be worn with a low-profile mask. I wear a six or eight-stitch with a standard profile and I wear a six-stitch with a low-profile. Learn to remove your mask properly.

Yep. Out then up. I wear an 8 stitch under my standard profile mask all of the time.

I agree! It's all in the technique.

As far as the advice to wear a beanie... Just keep the 8-stitch and turn it around backwards. You won't look any less professional.

Never, I repeat NEVER, turn your hat around backwards.

You will not only look less professional but like a total dork.

I can wear a 8 stitch under my Diamond Feather Weight, but after a couple of shots that caught the bill I opted for 6 stitch hats on the dish.

I have both the black and silver Diamond masks, both with standard WV doe skin pads. I can wear 8 stitches in both, and peal my mask off to the left.

But everybody's noggin is shaped differently, so what works for me may not work for you.

If you wear a beaning on the field, you look like dork. Sorry mates, but that's what the rest of us are thinking with that thing on your dome. Your best umpire friends won't tell you, but I will. Dork, spazz, dufuss, geek, wierdo, p*nis with little a cap on, etc. Don't do it. Please, spare yourself, and the rest of us the grief.

These aren't as "low profile" as the Wilson New View masks. They're kinda in between those, and an standard Honig's or Dynalite.

Perhaps if you ditch the crappy standard, thin pads, you'll have more room for your hat.

After wearing a 6 stitch for bases and plate my first season (financially motivated decision), I've worn a 4 for the plate and 8 on the field ever since. This year I decided to go with 4 stitch for the plate and 6 for the field. I thought that if I didn't like the 6 stitch on the bases, I could still get another year out of my 8 stitch hats. I'm totally sold on the 6, though. I think they look a little sharper than the 8's. As far as the plate goes, for me, the 4 stitch is the only option.

BEANIES.....lets let them die.......they belong in the history books and in movies....yes, they were once common, but then again so were black suits with neckties, maroon blazers and the outside balloon protector...lets leave them back there. If you are concerned about presenting a professional image, then ditch the beanie...

as was so well stated earlier in this thread, wearing a beanie and wearing your hat turned around backwards is equally as unprofessional...

MLB LOGO HAT ...If you are going to buy one for casual uses, then thats what they are for...thats why they sell them....

You do not wear a logo on a field in an officials capacity that you did not earn or are not entitled to....I think the military calls this "stolen valor"........they earned it, we didnt..

If you do not have an association hat and feel the need, then join the ABUA over at abua.com. Once a member you can purchase an ABUA hat from honigs....

Just my .02 of course

Maybe warren can start a UEUA association and sell hats......

I don't know... I kind of liked the idea of buying an MLB cap (what are those - about $26?) and then paying another $5 or so to sew a patch over the MLB logo... :hopmad: ... as opposed to spending $11.95 for a blank cap, and ... well you get the idea.
