Hi guys,...

My old Joe Brinkman 17" +POS shins, I think, have seen their day. While inspecting the old gear, I realized the "d-rings" and clips on the straps are rusty. Is this something I can replace, or is it 'new leg guard time' ?? :)

Sure, I'm sure someone out there deals in replacement parts. But if you have a big season coming up, and you're really in the mood for a new pair, then I'd say it's time for replacement.

straps are an easy replacement.....the D rings can be cleaned up with a brillo pad and some wd-40....Rust is indicative of moisture, and the need to get them dried out after use...

I take an extra 5 minutes after a plate game to spray and wipe my gear off after each use....and try not to let damp wet gear sit in my game bag....

I have the +POS Brinkmans as well, and they are still in good shape......but with the advancing technology, I can see that replacements are in my future as well......

Like any type of tool...and our gear is clearly "tools"...maintenence is required to keep them in shape.....invest time after each plate....and DEFINATELY at the end of the season when you put the gear away.....

Thanks Stan. After more research and posting on an additional site, I've come to the conclusion that it's time to replace them. Oddly enough, I did wipe down all my gear afterwards, ...but maybe not as well as I should, and this stuff has been sitting for 12-13 years .....so....that can't help...

While on the topic, I have a pair of the older WV triple knee shins by Douglas, before the fallout between West and Douglas over patent infringement.

The tag says return to Douglas for reconditioning and I remember a few years ago someone said it cost them $25 to get them reconditioned. Does anybody know if they still honor this? I guess I could call myself and probably will over lunch today while it's on my mind, but wanted to know if anybody had any recent experience.

Thanks Stan, will do! I'm looking for a decent price-point right now as I see people not necessarily looking at "top notch" shins as they do CP, etc. Hockey referee shins look enticing too for the price, ..it's ankle protection that would concern me there.

There are just too many damn choices! Bottom line:banghead:

Well honestly I'd invest more on the shin guards than the chest protector, but my chest isn't my weak-point as I typically do high school fastpitch and do that without a chest protector. My legs on the other hand, bruise frequently and hurt like a som-b*tch when I get hit.

You're nuts for A) Thinking that shin guards are more important than your CP, and :) For not wearing a CP at all for fast pitch. Do what you want I guess, but a softball hurts too.

I guess it's just who you got pitching...most of the girls at this level don't throw a 60 mph fastball, in this case I would definitely put on a CP. I do a lot of slow-pitch games as well and this summer I did a league where they didn't allow stealing and got tired of waiting the extra 20 min (extremely exaggerated) it took for the catcher to linger back to the screen, pick up a ball, and get it back to the pitcher so I just started knocking down the ball with my shins. I've still got bruises on my shins from doing this.

FYI: These are 18-19", according to the listing.

then there are a lot of you softball guys here that are nuts......:crazy:

but honestly, I know a fellow PIAA guy who did HS baseball for years without anything but a mask......B)

then I found out he was related to my wife....and that answered a lot of outstanding questions I had about her family.....(they are nuts too)....

I highly recommend the new "Davishins" available from GD or Between the Lines for anyone looking to replace or upgrade their shin protectors. I've had mine since June and am very pleased. They are lightweight with good wrap around protection and come with ankle and metatarsal protection. (all three removable and replacable ... attached with velcro) They stay in place and do not move or rotate as the previous model was very prone to do.

I know a lot of the "young buck" summer league umpires we have down here do it with only a mask. Hell, I found out one guy was doing a game without a cup one night. Fortunately for him he will never make that mistake again!!

Because the first games were played with a rolled up boxing glove and a broom handle.

Now that's something I never knew...

Thanks now I have another tidbit to add to my Cliff Claven type repository of useless knowledge.
