Ok, so...

There is a tournament coming up , the last one of the year . Sounds great because I finally get my money's worth from the cold weather gear I bought but have only used once or twice. But... there is a catch: it's a "Boo Bash". That means that the players coaches and parents will be in Halloween attire (I assume it will be more 9's - 12's). That's all fine and well, but the UMPIRES are required to dress up as well.

Has anyone done one of these themed tournaments?

I'm kinda bummed. Take the job and the game very seriously. That's why we fork up the money for the gear, no ? I'd MUCH rather wear my usual get up than a Transformers costume.

My UIC says dressing up as an umpire isn't allowed.

I've heard of this being done in softball all the time but this is the first time I've heard of baseball boys doing it. I'll have a hard time explaining to Frankenstein why Elmo ejected Batman because he didn't try to avoid contact at home. :fuel: I think I'll feel very out of place.

Any thoughts?

I'll start this response as many would expect. NO! Umpires shoud be there to represent their position and present themselves accordingly. Now, here goes the part where I'd be contradicting myself. Would I do this? Would I dress up? OF COURSE!! I'm a big kid and I'm there because I enjoy having a good time as well. Now don't get me wrong, the managers WOULD be made aware at the plate meeting, that even though I may be dressed as the tin woodsman from the wizard of Oz, or Jason from the Friday the 13th trilogy......that I am still the umpire. So if they don't want to click their heels while wishing there was no place like home (after an ejection), or Jason chasing them with a machette through the dugout for chirping too much, they should remember their place.

I could probably get a long robe to cover my gear, but I just don't think that the mask would go over well dressed as Father Guido Sarducci.

P.S. I am the UIC of my local league

They don't always wait till halloween around here. Iv'e met a few guys already this season mascarading around like coaches , and a couple of kids that were dressed up like they were catchers.

ROFL

And with that, it's time for a beer!

I suppose you could always dress as a coach and go sit on a bucket by the dugout, and yell loudly about how much better the view of the strike zone is from over there.

No -wait - they already do that, so there's no real humor to "get" with that idea... :D

I wouldn't touch that tournament with a 10 foot poll. Call me boring, but I will only walk on a baseball field in my uniform. I take the job too seriously to not dress right, plus I've invested a lot into my appearance on the field, I'm going to wear what I've invested in.

I guess I'm a stick in the mud too. I could see all kinds of potental problems with kids trying to lay baseball in costume. What if you think something is a hazard? Does he have to take off his costume or not play?

CarolinaBlue:

That was great.

While I'm all for fun wherever I can find it, I do have a problem with the players being in costume for safety reasons. And no, I probably wouldn't dress up myself...unless I wore my football uniform, knickers, knee socks, whistle!. That whistle could be interesting on a baseball field.:D

I'd have fun with it and dress up. But you still are the umpire. If you feel something is unsafe in a players costume then don't allow it.

Hopefully this will be the epitome of baseball being fun.

Couldn't agree more. There is nothing I love more about being umpire than freshly pressed pants and new polish on my shoes :BD:

But I feel rather obligated. My UIC is a really awesome guy and takes car of us. But he was clear in the e-mail "If you are not in costume you will not work."

However, we're only required to dress up on Saturday. I get to play mr. umpire on Friday and Sunday.

It's expected to be cold... so I was thinking...
