toss two coaches from same team in LL minors

This is the in house championship game for the LL minors, and I have to toss two coaches from the same team!!!

This is a double elimination playoff. I umped the first game between these two teams (green team beat the yellow team). Neither team lost again in the playoffs, so if the yellow team wins, they need to play one more game.

First inning the yellow team scores 2 runs.

3rd inning, yellow team is batting, with R1. Runner steals second and the throw is close, but the BR slides under the tag. Now mind you I'm the only ump, and I get out from behind the plate and run around to make the calls as needed. Next batter the R2 steals 3rd, the catcher threw the ball down and F5 has the ball when the runner is half way, I'm ready to call the kid out.F5 stands at the base waiting for the BR,I'm ready to call him out, and what happens??? F5 holds the tag 3 feet off the ground, and BR slides in under the tag "safe" I call.

DC goes nuts, starts yelling and saying the game is rigged. "You should be wearing a yellow jersey ump" he yells from the doug out

I should have tossed him there but I gave him a chance and just held up my hand and firmly said "that's enough coach"

So as the game goes on I can hear him mumble the game is fixed. They end up scoring 1 run to make it a 2-1 game (yellow team winning)

Bottom of the 5th green team is batting. They have the tallest kid on their team batting (probably 5'4" to 5'5" tall). The shortest kid for the defending team is catching. A pitch comes in at the top of his strike zone, catcher stands up to catch the ball, I call it a strike. Kid ends up striking out swinging.

3rd base coach comes over after that half of the inning asking how that was a strike.

Now mind you I have had enough from this bench.

I ask "are you the manager?"

"Oh, no, I just want to know where you where calling that" he said really calmly. So I give in and try to explain the size difference between the players. That's not the answer he wanted so he kept at it. At the end he put his arm across his chest where the letters would be and said "the ball was right here!!!"

"And that's a strike coach" I replied

as he is walking away he says 1ith his back to me facing the crowd " your horrible"

I replied " your gone coach"

He blows up saying " your throwing me out for asking a question, I didn't say anything". I'm all done explaining my self at this point and told him to leave.

Now the manager blows up yelling "why did you throw him out? He didn't say anything, he just asked a question!" And he keeps jawing and than he also says I'm horrible, and "you where a replacement because they couldn't get the other ump"

I say " your gone too coach"

My first two ejections in two years, come in one situation.

after the game,The lady in the concession stands, who is at every game, said to me "wow, you never throw anyone out, I'm surprised you didn't do it sooner.

I only had two or three fans at the end of the game try to talk smack, but every other fan (from both sides) congratulated me on a job well done, and the consensus was "I'm surprised you didn't toss them sooner" lol. Me too

Yellow team won, forcing another game, that the two coaches are not allowed to go to now :wow:

Sounds like good tosses, abeit a little late. Sounds like you may want to do that a little more, cuts down on the crap later. That may not be true but that's the impression I get. On the other hand, I never understand why leagues want to have year end play-offs but then just schedule one guy.

I have changed my approach to EJ after reading this site and after last night. I don't want to go around tossing people out of LL games, but gees, they didn't leave me much choice last night. I gave them every (too many) opritunities to stay in the game.

The Majors we have 2 umps on the field all season and playoffs.

The minors, they had high school kids doing the games and the league didn't want them to do the playoff so they asked if we would do them, and we agreed. Might think twice next year lol.

Good thing I have thick skin.

My question is, what are these coaches teaching their players by acting like this??? I mean your not coaching HS or the pros here it is 10U. WTF!

The tosses were justified but a little late. The moment they tell everyone "the umpire is cheating", someone should be going home. That will stop the cheating comments.

And, once the coach is next to you demonstrating where the pitch is, that is arguing balls and strikes. Good bye.

I am not quick to get rid of players and coaches. I generally ignore these kind of things if they are in the dugout or stay at there place in the coaches box. But, when they say "the umpire is cheating" or come to me and start arguing balls and strikes, it is time to get rid of them.

My only issue is they think the "You're horrible" comment got them tossed as it should but they still think they can do all of the other stuff and it is OK as long as they don't say "You're horrible". So, I would look to shut it up a little sooner if possible and they gave you 2 chances to do so.

Otherwise, they were well deserved EJ but needed to be done a few innings earlier.

I agree with you 100%. I'm still trying to refine my approach to EJ, I guess I don't want to be labeled the ump that throws guys out at the drop of a hat, but I guess I shouldn't care so much about that. Its a work in progress :wow:

You're on the right track, and will get where you need to be if you keep at it. Where you need to be? Well that is the place where coaches will approach the line, but not cross it.

The hand up with "that's enough" tells them where the line is, after that it's on them to decide if they want to cross it and find themselves watching the game from the parking lot.

Once you develop a reputation as one who is fair, but not willing to put up with garbage, you'll be the ump that all the teams want calling their games.

Gixx, you will get more of a rep from the way you handled the coaches than the EJ's itself. I only know of one umpire in my area that you would be advised to keep your mouth shut the entire game if you want to stay. The umps that get confrontational get the bad reps. If you let the coach toss themselves, you should not worry about your rep.

I'm a big addage guy, easy to remember guidelines. Of course it is still a case by case basis, but remember,"Throw more to throw less." You toss a few knuckleheads and the others straighten up.

this was their next played game

the one coach was in the parking lot when I arrived and he was not too happy and I just smiled as I walked past him to the field.. He watched the game from the parking lot:rollinglaugh:

at the pregame conference there was a league rep there to lay the ground work as far as coaches are to keep the fans in line, only managers can question, umpire has ultimate say etc.. lol

smooth game, back and forth and ended a one run game..

I wish the kids would of had the two coaches that where on the bench tonight, for the whole season... they where more encouraging to the kids than the other fellers

At least the way our district works it....As umpire-in-chief, I submit a list of all suitable umpires that worked for me to our district umpire-in chief. He reviews the list and then schedules the umpires for all-stars. Without submitting a list to him, no one would be picked. Maybe this happened in your district??

Here in our district each league puts a crew together for all-stars. Each league doesn't do a game involving their league crew. Makes scheduling easier too, because that is a requirement. Then when we get to the championship games. The leagues submit a list of umpires and they get chosen for those games.

we submitted our info to the guy that is the head of the district but I think there is some politics being played. I know the guy that is the head of the district also runs one of the umpire associations in the state too:TD:.
