1)Coaches cannot warm up pitchers ...hope your fields have lights 2)The little part that says there is no good reason to pay the umpires. Couple others that I cannot remember right now and the book itself is poorly stylized. The FED books and some 1800's British literature books are more pleasant to read than the LL book.

He got the standard 2 game suspension. Had to get the opposing coaches to stop from chipping at each other when the next batter came up. Couple innings later we had a rain delay and one of the other kids on the EJ'd players team admitted doing the same thing at another game and nothing happened. Also noted that there was another kid in the vicinity of the dugout who I threw out 2 years ago for blowing up a catcher when he was out by 5 steps.:hopmad:

If it is supposed to be your call, make one at least that way you have a call on the field to work with and since you were blocked you may luck into the right call and not of had to deal with the argument. Its better to ask your partner if s/he saw anything different than to ask for a complete bailout. Partner then either confirms your call or changes it and you work harder next time to not be blocked. mstaylor, that was the regional. Would of thought that with a full crew someone should of been able to seen it. Then again, with the small diamond and not having the second base umpire inside, its a hard play to see. Inside the diamond, that call would of been automatic, or should be.

LL has a lot of joke rules which is why I am trying to get my county league to go to something else since its not a sanctioned LL anyways. FED softball, MC takes precedence over OBS. In the cases that you have this happen, its usually partially the catcher's fault, and by association the coaches. They stand on the plate no matter where the ball is on the field and where the runners are or where they are going. When I notice it, I tell the HC to have the catcher not stand on the plate. Had a kid in LL this year do a full lower the shoulder and launched into the catcher's upper chest. No chance of a play coming at all.

I dont think announcers even watch the games. Half of the things, well more like 90%, they talk about that happened never did the way they say it did. Especially when watching NFL and during a Challenge. The call will almost every time opposite what the announcers are saying.

Coach challenges ''ME", about the rules?
SNIPERBBB replied to littleleagueump's topic in Off-Topic/Funny Stories
What gets a lot of young officials in any sport is that they know the rules, mostly, but they have the deer-in-headlights look and get ripped to shreds by aggressive coaches. Handling confrontation is a critical aspect of our jobs that really is not taught that well. Especially to the guys that cannot go to clinics and schools to learn the finer points of officiating. Try to avoid involving the kids like this in a play with a coach, they are probably confused enough as it is. -
I prefer to not have my hands resting on anything. Keeping your hands loose when doing this keeps them from getting hurt, may sting for a second if the catcher forgets his/her responsibilities. Plus it offers a bit more protection of the inner thigh.

The rule says the runner cannot be called out for the contact with the fielder when in legally contacting a base, unless intentional. Nothing is said about what happens on the subsequent play. I would rule obstruction and the runner stays on second as that would of been the base he would of reached had there been no obstruction. (In a sane world where I hope to live one day, that's how the play would of ended anyways). If you go with the way the rules imply, the OC is hitting the showers.

If you can do it, lasik is another thing you should look at. It has helped my dad out a lot. Still needs reading glasses to read though. Ever try one of those credit card sized magnifying glasses?

Might get a bit worse from the coach that's tossed, the assistant should know better. Gixx, you will get more of a rep from the way you handled the coaches than the EJ's itself. I only know of one umpire in my area that you would be advised to keep your mouth shut the entire game if you want to stay. The umps that get confrontational get the bad reps. If you let the coach toss themselves, you should not worry about your rep.

I am doing an LL tourn in Athens, OH on the 3rd thru 5th

They made a change in FED rules(1-6-7 and 1-7-1 in Fed FP) this year in baseball and softball about catcher's helmets and batting helmets having 100% clear plastic shield if they choose to have one in the event of head injury. Sunglasses should not fall under this rule as they can be removed from a player without the risk of additional injury unlike a batting/catcher's helmet. I do not see similiar changes in LL/OBR unless I am missing an update somewhere

Whether the U3 was experienced with 3-man or not, he should still know better than to stand that far right of the pitchers mound if he has done any 2-man. Majority of the balls hit are to that side of the field, there is no excuse to be hit by a batted ball on that side.

OBR Rule:7.06 When obstruction occurs, the umpire shall call or signal “Obstruction.” (a) If a play is being made on the obstructed runner, or if the batter-runner is obstructed before he touches first base, the ball is dead and all runners shall advance, without liability to be put out, to the bases they would have reached, in the umpire’s judgment, if there had been no obstruction. The obstructed runner shall be awarded at least one base beyond the base he had last legally touched before the obstruction. Any preceding runners, forced to advance by the award of bases as the penalty for obstruction, shall advance without liability to be put out. ( If no play is being made on the obstructed runner, the play shall proceed until no further action is possible. The umpire shall then call “Time” and impose such penalties, if any, as in his judgment will nullify the act of obstruction. Rule 7.06( Comment: Under 7.06(B) when the ball is not dead on obstruction and an obstructed runner advances beyond the base which, in the umpire’s judgment, he would have been awarded because of being obstructed, he does so at his own peril and may be tagged out. This is a judgment call. LL(Same rule language as OBR): 7.06 -- When the obstruction occurs the umpire shall call or signal “Obstruction.” (a) If a play is being made on the obstructed runner, or if the batter-runner is obstructed before touching first bas e, the ball is dead and all runners shall advance without liability to be put out, to the bases they would have reached, in the umpire's judgment, if there had been no obstruction. The obstructed runner shall be awarded at least one base beyond the base last legally touched by such runner, before the obstruction. Any preceding runners forced to advance by the award of bases as the penalty for obstruction shall advance without liability to be put out. (B) If no play is being made on the obstructed runner, the play shall proceed until no further action is possible. The umpire shall then call "Time" and impose such penalties, if any, as in that umpire's judgment will nullify the act of obstruction. NOTE (1): When the ball is not dead on obstruction and an obstructed runner advances beyond the base which, in the umpire’s judgment, the runner would have been awarded because of being obstructed, the runner does so at his/her own risk and may be tagged out. This is a judgment call. NOTE (2): If the defensive player blocks the base (plate) or base line clearly without possession of the ball, obstruction shall be called. The runner is safe and a delayed dead ball shall be called

But if you teach the coach to fish, good luck with your next game :HD:

The OP is about LL, hence the reference.

That and where you have untrained officials of any sport doing games and have no knowledge of the rules and you get what I call "Hear-say" rules. It usually comes out of an explanation by an official that slowly morphs into a "rule" for a coach. My favorites: "Reaching" Basketball- Not a foul. There has got to be contact for a personal foul to occur. "Over the Back" Basketball- Again, not a foul. See above about contact. "Deep" Slow-Pitch - Not a rule, just an explanation for a pitch with no arch. "Two from the outfield, one from the infield"

( The Set Position. Set Position shall be indicated by the pitcher when that pitcher stands facing the batter with the pivot foot in contact with, and the other foot in front of the pitcher’s plate, holding the ball in both hands in front of the body and coming to a complete stop. From such set position the pitcher may deliver the ball to the batter, throw to a base or step backward off the pitcher's plate with the pivot foot. Before assuming the Set Position, the pitcher may elect to make any natural preliminary motion such as that known as “the stretch." But if the pitcher so elects, that pitcher shall come to the Set Position before delivering the ball to that batter. NOTE: The pitcher need not come to a complete stop in Little League (Minor/Major). Junior/Senior/Big League Baseball the pitcher must come to a complete and discernible stop.

LL, OBR, runner gets one base from the last base legally touched. NFHS softball, its umpire's judgment on whether they could of gotten to the next base.

I think I am moving. 20-25 dollars, plate umpire, is pretty much the standard for summer leagues that are not legion or other HS/college affiliated ball in SE Ohio. Varsity HS around here is low end 35, high end 60-70.

Never make any promise, challenge or anything else about how you are going to be calling a game during the pregame, or any other time at the game. Only thing you should be doing in the pregame is introductions, proper equipment, ground rules/dead ball areas, line-ups, special rules to be applied for the tournament or rule changes for the year if the beginning of the tourn/season.

That would mean that coaches actually start teaching fundamentals again!:BD: Our jobs would be so much easier if kids slid every time and placed the tag at the runner's feet instead of trying to take runner's head off. Don't these people know how hard it is to make a call when you have to watch 2 events 3-5 feet away from each other simultaneously?
-
That must be nice to have coaches and players that don't believe the games they are playing do not matter. Too many people around here subscribe to the 18-year-get-rich-quick-scheme. Advice is fine as long as its off the field and out of uniform.

I pretty much hear all comments from the crowd as uninformed so in that context I find their comments amusing. For me, they have to be an exceptionally stupid to get dumped. I have a pretty slow fuse anyways as far as ejecting people to start with.

I would of been off the field before the coach even had a chance to talk to me. At my state meeting a year or so ago, we were told to ignore such a thing happening any ways as there is no way in heck you are controlling the winning team's players.
