I'm not an ump, I'm a lurking daddy coach learning the rules. But from a lot of lurking, I've learned quite a bit about mechanics, rules interps, and why they are done the way they are. If you've "never heard of" this, it is a pretty clear indication that you do not have the same level of training and experience of many of the posters on this board. You might consider that there is a lot of expereince here and that you are going to get more out of learning from other posters than you are from telling people what you do yourself. Just something to consider. Only one umpire, Matt, has said he does this. That could easily indicate it's something that is done in his region or a mechanic taught at his association. If a runner stealing second is not tagged by the fielder and slides past the base, I give a safe mechanic like Matt, then if the fielder goes to tag him, give the "off the base" mechanic (Usually with one hand), and signal the out. (Or safe if he gets back to the base) You are telling everyone that you saw the initial tag attempt and that he wasn't tagged. It's up to the defense to figure out that he overslid the base and that they need to go tag him. I think you are misusing this mechanic. Generally used for signaling a throw on a force that pulls fielder off of the bag. I've never seen it used as you described.

Specifically, to the wearer, I found the 995's to be very narrow in D width and very uncomfortable. The 950's, on the other hand, are very comfortable and seem to be a much more regular width. I returned the 995's and got the 950's and am very happy.

I have had the NB 450's, the Reebok Field Magistrate plates and the new NB 460's. All great shoes, the Reeboks are the most comfortable but the new NB polish up better. All of them are good. And while we're on the subject of shoes, I just got the NB 950 base shoes. Awesome. I had the 995's before, they were crap.

I have had a couple of Wilson masks replaced. I think your mistake may have been going to the manufacturer and not to your supplier. My suppliers have always replaced the masks.

Keep doing what you're doing. Towel between innings, bring more that one hat to the field (I sweat through mine until the bill of the hat literally drips). I do like the sweat band idea a little. Just part of umpiring in the South.

If he didn't move rather hastily to engage the rubber and you had runner(s) on base, I'd balk him there too. The pitcher can deceive the runner all he wants to, but the deceiving has to be legal.

Sounds to me like he is simulating the start of a pitching motion in an illegal attempt to deceive the runners. Balk.

Sounds like this guy may be in over his head. FED says a player can't allow himself to be hit, not that he has to make an attempt to avoid. IMO, if the pitcher throw whatever pitch in the batter's box and it hit the batter, unless the batter leans into it, batter is going to first. Your warning should have been made during your converstation involving the HPB. Your batter should have been ejected, there is no restricting for players. Sounds like this umpire is working the same schools too much, too.
