Top flap has tie down that I can use for the shins when needed between games if they get a little extra perspiration (always carry a bottle of fabreeze along with me in the bag) or my cold weather gear.

I was originally in the foul ball court until I looked up the rule. I was getting this mixed up with the scenario that any pitch that hits the dirt can NOT be a called *OR* caught 3rd strike....even if the batter swings and misses it's a dropped 3rd strike situation.

A ball that hits the ground can not be legally caught though. I have to look up the specific wording...but I do not believe you can legally catch a foul tip on a ball that bounced in the dirt. Maybe others can chime in on this...pretty busy here at work today lol.

Here's an interesting one. Thankfully it did not come to fruition but this is the situation that occurred last night. Ball in play. R2 rounds 3rd and comes home...*I* notice he missed the bag on the way...see the 3rd base coach notice it as well but he doesn't call the kid back (play was developing and he was halfway down the line by then)...kid scores. No appeal yet...I wait....opposing coach calls time...I'm thinking...ok here we go lol...he makes a pitching change...I'm thinking...ok...does he have until the 1st pitch of the new pitcher to make the appeal or does the appeal become null when the pitching change takes place? I was going to allow him to make the appeal up until the 1st pitch of the new batter with the new pitcher on the mound...which took goodness...probably 2-4 minutes with warm-ups ect. All the while I'm just waiting for a parent to walk up to the fence and get the manager's attention lol. So...was I right that the appeal is solely based on before the next "official" pitch?

If the batter swung and the catcher caught the ball it's strike 3...there is no arguing that...I don't understand where the OC is trying to appeal this? Whether there was contact with the ball does not matter if the catcher caught the ball with his glove before it hit the ground (assuming the pitch did not hit the dirt before the batter hit the ball)

Agreed....if it's not obvious that the feet had left the box and you can see that the batter did not intend to interfere then I would be calling foul. If he's clearly out of the box though then you have to call him out on INT.

Yes...dead ball...call the strike...everyone goes back to where they started before the pitch.

The interpretation that we have had at the State tournament level in PA is that the runner *can* advance on an over throw or on an attempted pick-off from the catcher, even if his forward progress has stopped. The smart/sneaky coaches that still want to delayed steal just slow their base runners progress to a crawl to allow them to still go on the catchers throw back to the pitcher. it's a gray area...but technically legal assuming the runner has NOT stopped his forward progress.

Agreed...I was thinking of a scenario where F2 is sitting just up the 3b line or on the plate without the ball and the runner arrives before the ball gets to F2.

If anything it would seem like OBS on F4...and anything after that, caused by the OBS, is moot as stated previously. The potential INT would not have occurred had the OBS not taken place 1st.

In every way I have understood the rule... *I* think you got it dead right. Ball in fair territory...bat dropped which hits ball...its a dead ball OBR. Bat dropped in fair territory and ball rolls into the bat...live ball.

I'll tweak the scenario a bit...if the catcher was indeed blocking the entire plate with his shin AND had been camped out there the entire time (meaning didn't end up there while making a play on the ball) then it would clearly be OBS. As was said before...by FED rules even if he were making a play on the ball it would still be OBS in that case...but those things do not appear to be the case in this instance from your description.

Wow...this thread rapidly went down the rabbit hole lol. One Thong reference and forget about it haha... Ok...you have me concerned now...why would there be a 15min convo on having an indicator while doing the bases??? As far as the local association being strict and not Smitty with long sleeve base and short sleeve top...I actually now know of a cpl PIAA guys locally that do that...but I will look into the convertible jacket option. LRZ...appreciate your SEPA input...obviously I'm more concerned with my mechanics ect....but I think it's fairly clear from everything I read here and elswhere that looking the part professionally can get you started off on the right track with coaches and fans before the 1st pitch is even delivered. That's not to say that you might not catch me wearing a black compression long sleeve base layer this Sat morning up here in NEPA with the temps hovering around 50 though No long sleeve or jacket is getting here in time for that game

For those of us up north where it can be a little cool early on....what is the opinion on wearing long sleeve compression base layer with a short sleeve jersey...assuming the color matches? I'm just getting started here...don't have any long sleeved jerseys yet.

More good advise Have not yet gone the PIAA route. Plan on doing so...thought maybe I should get my feet wet with local rec/Little League the 1st year. I would like to take the PIAA test before the end of the season though and start doing some higher level fall ball if things go well. My work schedule won't allow me to work many middle or high school games unfortunately. Hoping to get to watch some local Legion games though once their season starts up. Those guys are pretty much all HS and college Umpires.
