In the actual PDF of the rules (here), you'll see the new text of 8.05(k).

...how 'new' is that verbiage? Not sure, but my 2011-edition Baseball Canada rulebook says: While my 2014 book says: So sometime between 2011 and 2014.

Stupidity from the announcers as usual, but at least they got the call right.
-
Judging from where he looked and pointed immediately afterwards, it looks like 3B called it.

Back-to-back unintentional HBPs lead to all kinds of mayhem

The first: Giancarlo Stanton takes an 88mph fastball off his cheek: http://m.mlb.com/video/v36168595 Totally accidental and everyone treats it as such. However, because he was ruled to be swinging on the pitch, Reed Johnson takes his place, and on the very next pitch... http://m.mlb.com/video/v36168933 What a mess. Hope Stanton's okay though. One of the most exciting young players in the game right now and you hate to see someone go down like that :-
-
Nope! He's not necessarily preventing the ball from crossing into foul territory. If he touches the ball while it is in fair territory, then sure, fair ball. But he can be standing in fair territory while the ball still crosses foul. For instance: http://m.mlb.com/video/topic/6479266/v36038123

I love Bob Davidson's jazz hands safe call. Wish I was in Canada when this all went down -

List of face masks worn by active MLB Umpires as of 6/21/2012
MikeSafari replied to Fittske24's topic in Umpire Equipment
Seems to me that out of the guys who wear HSMs, the MVP4000 is far and away the most popular choice. Interesting... -
Heard a similar thing recently, but the opposite. Batter tipped the ball, catcher caught it cleanly while R1 was heading over to second and would be in there with miles to spare. Catcher turned and asked me, "Isn't that a foul ball?" Uh, no. No, it's not. Who's teaching these guys the rules of the game?

I'm interested in trying out a full HSM, but I'm not worried about the protection my mask affords me.

About 40km outside Toronto. I'll ship the mask in as small a box as I can fit it in to save on cost. It's not too bad, actually. I mean, nothing like a lightweight mask, but great for young guys starting out, or as a backup. This is actually one of two of these I have, and I don't need three masks. (But boy oh boy do I want a Nike Ti or Wilson low-profile...) These are nice masks, heavy but they are absolute TANKS! Durable and Protective as well. Definitely a tank-like mask and it served me well for many years.

http://m.mlb.com/tor/video/v35597887/?game_pk=382476 Thoughts? As a Jays fan, I can't help but think Maddon got this right, but I guess we'll see.

Replay - Finger pointing/waving, head shaking
MikeSafari replied to Thunderheads's topic in Professional
Yeah, but then that just introduces a whole other range of problems. Who's counting to five? Is there a timer, or is one of the umpires sitting there saying, "One Mississippi, two Mississippi..."? I agree that there should be a better way to get a replay started, but I don't think a five second time limit is it.- 18 replies

I've found that soccer socks are perfect for use underneath shinguards. They're designed to stay up and well ventilated, as well. I've got a few pairs from Nike, Diadora, and Under Armour. But nothing that cost $30 :-

I need your help. Need cash. Nike Ti and other masks.

that's the Diamond 4. Still for sale! Diamond iX3 featherweight mask. Comes with Wilson MLB harness and All Star magnesium TG powder coated to match the silver powder coat of the mask. This mask is brand new as well and as you can see it has the extended throat guard removed. Willing to take a huge loss on this one just to get it out the door. Will ship for $50 No I'm referring to the other one: without the separate TG. Looks like it's the Nike, which is entirely too rich for my blood. Looks great, though. -

Which mask is the one without pads and separate TG in the pics? Pics number 4, 5, and 6. That would look amazing with some tan pads... -

Did anyone notice that Bill Miller actually said "BAM!" and not "Out!"? But yeah the finger wagging is super annoying and I think players need to rein that in. I suspect next year we'll see managers being forced to challenge a call right away (none of this "go out and have a chat with the umpire while your video guy tells your bench coach whether we can win or not" crap), which I would hope reduces this. But I guess we'll see.- 18 replies

From the high first base camera, it looks fair because as you pointed out you can see the paint kick up after impact. From the right field line, it looks foul. Could go either way. I'm with @JaxRolo on this one.

Man, that is hella close--no way I could overturn that with the evidence provided. Nice to see they didn't waste ten minutes looking at it from seventy-three different angles, though
