Saw an advertisement for the "Umpire IQ APP" for the Iphone. Its free so I downloaded it just to check it out. I'm having some issues already with the first question I got. Situation: "With 1 Out and a 3-2 count on the batter, the runner on first is stealing on the pitch. The batter swings, misses, and his follow- through accidentally hits the catcher as he is throwing to 2nd. The runner reaches 2nd Safely"... What's the call? When I first read it, I was thinking I would be inclined to probably not call interference because it sounds like the batter took a natural swing and didn't fall over the plate or do anything out of the ordinary to hinder the catcher. Either way judgement call, HTBT kind of moment As it turns out, of the 3 options all 3 had "Backswing Interference?" Here's the Answer I chose: "This is backswing Interference. The batter is out on Strikes and the runner is out for the Batter's Interference." Here's there Correct Answer?????????? "This is backswing Interference. The batter is out on strikes and the runner is returned to 1st" Do any of you guys know of any good Apps that deal with rules quizzes or situational plays?

I remember a few years ago doing an 11 year old rec league with a play at the plate. Not sure if I called him Safe or Out, but during the half inning I was by the fence getting a drink of water. A mom says to me, "Are you Catholic?" The question caught me off guard but I responded, "Yes?" Her Response: Well, you need to go to confession because that call was so bad. Just started laughing right in front of her

I think they meant to say Obstruction and He hindered the runner http://wap.mlb.com/play?content_id=28000089 http://wap.mlb.com/play?content_id=28000089

Last weekend a guy in our association has been forced to do a lot of machine pitch now because of knee problems. He had done VS high school for 10 plus years and had never experienced worse coahces. 4 ejections in 8 games. At one point he was tripled teamed by 3 coaches and had no partner to help stop these assistants from charging him. He finally couldn't take it anymore and asked me after my last game to work the last game with him. I said sure. What do you know... 2nd inning bang-bang force play at 3rd, ball beats the runner though, OUT! Coach comes charging out asking me to talk to my partner. I tell him "no, thats my call. in my judgement he was out." Continues to gripe. After he heads back to the dugout, heads for my partner and starts yelling at him. Gets ejected and had to be escorted off the field. Also his team lost 16-1 in 3 innings

Yeah, not me. Completely worthless mechanic that communicates absolutely nothing. Where the hell else would the tag have been? Pass. Agree... Good positioning and Timing, but if he calls him out, he obviously tagged him Communicates nothing? If it appears to everyone else that the hand got in (from whatever angle) this worthless mechanic lets everyone know what's going on. I just can't see an issue with this here .... but that's me .... I guess I'm just being nit-picky. I don't think I would've done it because I think it looked pretty obvious on the play but it's not a bad mechanic

How does Culbreth keep Upton in this game?

I like the blue ballbag -
CCA: R1, R2. Fly Ball, U3 Goes Out Umpire Responsibilties: PU: Moves towards third base. PU reads R2 and if R2 tags and advances to third, PU rotates there for all plays. Also looks like U2 is never set. Could have been because he realized late he would have to cover the play when PU wasn't there.

Steal of Home With a Few Other Things Happening

I think you have the rare Catchers interference/ Catchers Balk... I don't have the FED rule book in front of me but it shouldn't be too different from the OBR rule on it. IMHO I think the batter is just trying to avoid interfering with the play so I would not have been considering anything with him. 7.07 If, with a runner on third base and trying to score by means of a squeeze play or a steal, the catcher or any other fielder steps on, or in front of home base without possession of the ball, or touches the batter or his bat, the pitcher shall be charged with a balk, the batter shall be awarded first base on the interference and the ball is dead. "Time! That's Interference! (Point each runner to his new base) Batter to first! -
Ill bring up the question on positiong. Would it have more sense for U1 to be closer to a 90 degree angle to see that throw from F2?

Just watching the NC State/Rice Game 2. In the top of tenth tie game. No one on with a 2-1 count and NC State batting. Inside pitch and the batter chicken wings his arm. Hits him in the elbow. Immediately HP umpire calls "Time, Thats a ball!" Hopefully someone can get a video of this because I applaud this umpire for making such a difficult call in a high intesity extra inning game. He absolutely got the call correct and knew he was going to get chewed out for it.

Had two partners in one week call balks on pitchers for taking signs off the rubber. Both of these guys are wonderful umpires and been doing it for a while. I wait till after the game and say "I don't think its a balk to take signs off the rubber just you're not supposed to do it." One partner looked at my like I'm crazy and asserted that that was definitely a balk. Also neither one of them get arguments on there balk call but if I call a balk on a pitcher who stepped more towards home than third base on a pickoff completely deceiving the runner, the coach can't figure out what he did wrong. Just don't understand sometimes

Gotta love the announcers use of "foul tip" throughout the whole video

Same thing happened during the Braves Mets game tonight after Justin Upton was called out on strikes

Correct about the whiners. One of the coaches complained about every little thing the whole game but you have to love karma when they give up 7 in the last to lose

Working a 14U USSSA championship game behind the plate. It's a tight game and in the bottom of the 4th notice the Home HC on third begins talking to Visitor AC. The talking escalates and before I know it they are a few inches from eachother's faces yelling at one another. I call time and immediately walk down the third base line. They calm down when they see me coming. I point to both dugouts and issues warnings and say not talk to talk to the other team anymore. Game continues without any other issues. I'm a young umpire and understand how to handle coaches arguing with me, but not much experience with coaches arguing with coaches. 1) Any advice on how to handle these situations? (it could have easily escalated) 2) DId the coaches deserved to be ejected immediately? Thanks this is my first post and glad to join.
