This was a good argument a few weeks ago at Gameday! OBSTRUCTION is the act of a fielder who, while not in possession of the ball and not in the act of fielding the ball, impedes the progress of any runner. Rule 2.00 (Obstruction) Comment: If a fielder is about to receive a thrown ball and if the ball is in flight directly toward and near enough to the fielder so he must occupy his position to receive the ball he may be considered in the act of fielding a ball. It is entirely up to the judgment of the umpire as to whether a fielder is in the act of fielding a ball. In the first, IMO if the fielder does not have to occupy that position to recieve the ball and his blocking of the runner's view impedes the runner's progress back to the base, then I have Obstruction. In the 2nd, IMO I think this one is more difficult to call in OBR and I probably won't call because of the bolded part, but if it obvious that he doesn't have to occupy that position to receive the ball, then you could obstruction on your judgement.

7.10: Successive appeals may not be made on a runner at the same base. If the defensive team on its first appeal errs, a request for a second appeal on the same runner at the same base shall not be allowed by the umpire. (Intended meaning of the word err is that the defensive team in making an appeal threw the ball out of play. For example, if the pitcher threw to first base to appeal and threw the ball into the stands, no second appeal would be allowed.) Sounds like you have an argument here. First what a terrible job by PU for throwing his partner under the bus. Second,Even if the BU got the call wrong, you can't have a second appeal. What the defensive manager should have done was gone out to the BU and asked him to get some help with the PU, instead of going straight to PU

Question my buddy asked me: OBR R1... Pitcher balks but still throws to first without disengaging. Ball out of play... Does the runner get 3rd because you make any awards before enforcing ball out of play?

I've noticed this a lot in the Majors in regard to the tag at 2nd. It seems like the way the MLB Umpires interpret a tag as just "secure and complete" possesion of the ball, no voluntary release needed like a catch. For example: 1) He was called out at second because he tagged 2nd with secure and complete possesion of the ball and then seperately a slide knocks it out. 2) Alfonso Marquez called out a runner at second (Giants and Rays Game) because the ball was GLOVED from a throw tagging second base for the a double play. He had secure and complete possesion of the ball, then the contact with the ground caused the ball to come out. 3) 2003 Playoffs between Boston and Oakland...U3 Wilke calls runner going back to 3rd out when he is tagged. The momentum of the fielder causes him to fall to the ground immediately after the tag and the ball pops loose, still out! In all of these plays, they do not follow the definition of a catch which requires voluntary release and mantaining control of the ball during contact with the ground. I think he got the call right at second because the tag had secure and complete possesion.

R2, R1 and pick off at 2nd and it goes into the outfield. As R2 attempts to go to 3rd he is Obstructed by F6 (Fed rules so automatic 1 base). Anyways, R2 realizes he's getting the base and trots to third, meanwhile F8 throws and throws it into the dugout. R2 gets Home and R1 gets 3rd . Coach comes out. Coach: what did you call? Me: Obstruction Coach: Well isn't that a dead ball? Me: No, and he gets home, 2 Bases from Time of Throw Coach: oh okay... Wait! Time of Throw? I thought when it goes into the dugout Me: Nope Time of Throw

Something along the lines of "that's right, take that, I got you out" kinda taunting him while spiking the ball down. In a higher age group, I might have ejected him for that... What do you guys think?

12 U State Championships I've got the first two games behind the dish. Play at the plate in the first game and catcher makes a great tag to get him out. F2 then proceeds to throw the ball down and say something to the runner (Ejectable I know). But I immediately get the catcher aside and explain how I can eject him for that and don't talk to another player again. Next Inning another play at the plate and Runner gets his hand in. F2 thinks he missed the plate and tags him, SAFE. He then throws his glove down and walks to the backstop to start punching it. HE'S GONE! Coach after game said he wasn't even going to play him in the next after those actions. Final game I'm in the field for the championship. 2nd inning 2 out and a hit to Left Field. As R2 rounds 3rd he has to alter his path around the F5. I say, "That's Obstruction!" Play at the plate and partner calls him OUT. I come in Immediately wave him off and say "That run scores" and echo obstruction. This team goes insane. manager is calm and wants an explanation but AC is not. They protest the game even though we told them it's a judgement call. So while we're waiting for the TD and UIC to come AC will not shutup and after being warned partner ejects him. He was originally going to walk away but then turns around and goes, "you know what i'm going to get my money's worht!" Good scream at my partner then leaves and sits in the stands. we tell HC you guys are going to forfeit if he doesn't leave and he leaves. Obviously protest not upheld. 2 Innings later R1 and R2, double steal by the same team who got ejected earlier. I get in position and he's obviously OUT! Here's where I messed up and thought it was ball 4 though so I look back at my partner and the batter is still there (My bad I know I had a major slip up and lost the count). So I bang him out. HC goes insnae again "You can't wait that long to make that call!" Takes off his hat and says, "You Suck! You're terrible!" Adios Muchacho! Oh Yeah His team lost 16-2, but every fan let me know how much I was stealing from the kids after that.

Good Ejection... I agree with MJR and add be careful when telling a coach to come out and talk to you. If they're screaming at me in the dugout, a good stern "That's enough!" with the stop sign usually works. If they want to eject themselves after that, They can continue to scream at me from the parking lot!

It's the correct answer. 7.09 It is interference by a batter or a runner when -- (d) Any batter or runner who has just been put out hinders or impedes any following play being made on a runner. Such runner shall be declared out for the interference of his teammate; Should it not be a double play, when the batter strikes out and then interferes with the catcher attempting to put out the runner?
