I think Hawk's a clown, but I'm not sure what he did or said in that short clip that was objectionable. He was actually kind of effusive in his praise last night, saying that MLB 'sent them' a great crew. Of course, they were winning (a rarity these days) so easy to say.

So do you think that stopping at first base while the ball is in the air. Tagging up, waiting for the catch, and then running, constitutes "something other than running". Isn't tagging up "something other than running"? I agree with you, this goes beyond continuing action and is a deliberate, unsporting act in my opinion.

And one of the better announcers, Len Kasper, didn't even have a peep of a protest, knew the rule immediately....

The more savvy coaches (an admitted rarity) know how to ask in a way that gets the point across without becoming belligerent. Instead of "where was that", they know where it was height-wise. They'll say "was that inside?" or "was that just high?". It gives the PU a face-saving yes/no question, isn't confrontational, and subtly makes the point that they're questioning it and/or trying to find your zone limits but isn't obnoxious. Now if it escalates from there, sure, different story, and it happens, but I've found it to be much rarer than with the usual daddy/travel crowd.

The good side is that most basketball, except the City League (urban, Columbus City Schools primarily) is 3-man, even at the Fr/JV levels. And virtually all school baseball, even jr high, is 2 man. Again, only City League sub-varsity is 1 man, but they pay $60 and even then a lot of their games are 2 man. So at least newer/younger officials get a decent chance to work on the proper mechanics right off the bat.

The only way I would call a hit batter from the bases is if it's one of those 100%, everyone in the stadium saw it, if I don't reverse this call my partner will be on youtube/Deadspin kind of calls. In other words, pretty damn rare.

I do football and basketball as well. Baseball easily has the highest equipment cost but also the highest revenue potential due to long season (compared to the others unless you want to do spring/summer or AAU basketball - no thanks). Basketball is fun but different, good exercise. Football takes quite a bit of time to prepare but the shortest season. I feel like just when I'm starting to hit my stride and it's over. And games tend to be clustered on the same nights for everyone, at least around here (Mon and Thur for jr high, varsity on Fri, JV on Sat), not spread out like baseball. Anyway, central OH breaks down as follows (approx...it might vary a bit depending on league): Jr. High: Football $38, Baseball $38, Basketball $38 Freshman: Football $40, Baseball $38, Basketball $38 (I think, can't remember) JV: Football $45, Baseball $40, Basketball $40 Varsity: Football $60, Baseball $50, Basketball $60 Travel/Youth: Football $45, Baseball $45, Basketball varies widely ($20-$30 for running clock games, etc) naturally, more variation for travel/non-scholastic games, but these are averages I've seen. As far as grief, not sure there's much difference. HS games and coaches, much less grief, travel/ youth with daddy coaches = much more grief. Pretty universal. At least with football, they're not very close to you. And in basketball you have the T avail if needed.

It's one thing to be demonstrative on a warning. It's another to cross the line into aggressive, which in my opinion happened in this case and was unprofessional.

As I understand it, unless you're facing ball speeds regularly above 85 mph, there simply isn't much difference between the MVP2500 and MVP4000. Perhaps you may find them easier to get quickly.

Cop-out answer. If you are going to be on this forum-BE on this forum. Bought 5 Wilson HSMs Last season. Will buy 5 different ones next season and mabey 2 this fall Respectfully I wouldn't expect a manufacturer to get into a detailed comparison on a competitor product - for a whole host of reasons (legal and otherwise) - on an internet forum. From this and other posts in the past, they're the most open manufacturer I've ever seen as far as responsiveness. As to the Wilson, while I'm not an owner myself, I didn't like the way it sat as much when I tried it. And I've heard (admittedly anecdotes though I knew one owner personally) that the pistons can break and Wilson isn't very helpful or responsive. I think it's kind of a useless gimmick - if I can depress the pistons easily with just hand pressure, a ball at game speeds will just bottom it out and provide little useful protection. Just another thing that can - and does - break.

3BLX would have been fine, he was a good bit past that. Usually that's just fine or even better, this time it wasn't.

As an owner of both an MVP4000 and an MVP2500 (in use by my son), I can wholeheartedly endorse this helmet. It's well-balanced, has excellent vision, actually cooler with even just a slight breeze than mask and hat, and fits like a glove. The only tiny little nit that I would pick, which is a small issue, is that with the MVP4000, since it has the extra vinyl nitrile protective forehead band, I find the gap between chinpad and face/jaw a little more noticeable than when I used the MVP2500. It also seems to be just a little smaller than I'd like, leaving the mask frame seemingly right up against the upper jaw bone. I think it's more a comfort issue really than a safety one, I just would like a more substantive chin pad. @All-Star Sports: are there any options for a slightly thicker chin pad or a more wraparound style?

Seriously? A raving maniac going crazy in the dugout in DIRECT response to a balls/strikes call, then immediately turns and starts yelling profanities at the BU? The bashing wasn't directed at the ump? What on earth do you think it was directed at? You think he was just REALLY upset about all the calls from the bullpen?

No way, no how I'd call this in any game I do. This is the kind of call that gets you on the front page of Deadspin.

The reason you could tell in this case is because of how the fielder straddled the base. He had the base almost perfectly between his two feet. And his feet were spread much wider then the width of the base. So if you looked at the base, and then looked at the width his feet were spread apart it was clear that there was about 4-5 inches of space on each side. If he had not been so symetrical to the bag it would not have been as noticeable. If it was that blatant, that's just laziness on the fielder and I'm not giving him that. If it's a case of brushing a little behind the plate (a little ~ a couple inches), especially with an imminent slide, you're probably getting that call.

Doesn't this prove @maven's point? The defense, through their fielder's choice, chose to make the 3rd out on R2. They certainly could have made the 3rd out on the B/R, but they didn't. So, seems like 4.09 is out. Does 7.12 apply if there's nothing to appeal? The runner didn't miss the base - can't miss what you never reached in the first place. Retouch isn't the situation, so that's out too. Similar for 6.05 - neither a miss nor a tag occurred.
