In this case, I'd say "announcer". The color guy, Steve Stone, tried to get in a word edgewise and say that he dropped it but Hawk wouldn't have none of that darn truthtellin' going on, stepping in immediately and shutting it down with his tired rant. Replay wouldn't have touched that call, way too inconclusive. But the old dinosaur is comforted by the thought that someday soon he will be vindicated. And next year when it doesn't happen it will just be further proof of the conspiracy. These two have a bit of history. Last year, Stone was much more willing to disagree with Hawk and correct him on-air, and Hawk was FURIOUS! He was an incredible baby, not talking to Stone much - on or off the air - and even sitting something like 20 feet apart, as far away as they could in the booth. They had some sort of blowup in the offseason where Hawk got all butthurt and Stone was told to tamp it down and just be Hawk's mascot. Best color analyst in the business and they've got him muted for this clown. The radio team is so much better than the tv crew as a whole, but they get much less play, obviously. -

I don't see any balk at all....I'm not sure the tag touched him, but I'm not picking that nit either. No leg break, made distance, good jump move to me. -
Didn't seem like an overly long delay, just a quick check to see if he caught it. Seemed like such a routine play that a normal, relaxed mechanic was fine. Bad, bad baserunning.

Good call...and good restraint on the announcers part in actually, you know, looking at the replay before spouting off. This one always confuses me...what would be the FED ruling in this case? Would they actually make us call an out on this one?

A better way of phrasing the 'warning' is to say "make sure you pause, that was VERY close". You accomplish the exact same thing and if you're called on it, you can tell them - completely honestly - that I didn't ignore any violation, he came close to the line but didn't cross it and I'd do the same for your pitcher. That is still coaching. Don't do it. Just call the balk. Maybe they will learn. I disagree, I think there's a legitimate place for preventive officiating like this. At a high-level tournament or post-season setting, less so, but in a run of the mill school game or regular season, I think it's fine, but it has to be limited and ideally done EARLY in the game. Late and close, it's too late.

That's exactly what I thought too...note at the end he goes past the base to the right and has enough awareness to immediately look back to see if it worked.

That's what I was thinking too...the way that Molina put his hands up and on the ump, there's no way he'd get away with that if he weren't playing peacemaker between the PU and someone else.

Where at in Central Ohio? Because in Washington Court House, every kid in all of Fayette County plays LL and the Legion sponsored was always a major production (until recent internal problems). Columbus metro area...I've never heard of a LL team in this area and very little about Legion.

It's a racket and I know it. My assigner makes each umpire have 4 or 5 different association hats, and makes a $10 profit on each one he sells us. He drives around in a Cadillac escalade. Unfortunately it's this or no games, at least when I'm down in San Diego. Does this guy have a monopoly on the entire San Diego area? Sounds crazy but stranger things have happened. Baseball mafia.

I'll at least give them credit for knowing the rule exists and that Hamilton was wrong for being on the plate....so there's a kernel of hope, above average by (low) announcer standards

Ervin Santana balked all night last night by those standards. The first was mighty picky - dare I say not there? - but the second was more obvious.

Unless you Zapruder both plays to the nth degree, they're pretty much the exact same move. I'm fine calling it either way, yea in an ideal world they'd both be called the same, but so what? Could go either way, one crew called it heads, the other went with tails. If you flirt with the line so closely, you're going to have it go both ways sometimes.
