Have you considered using the kid-behind-the-plate-dressed-as-a-catcher as your protective device? Short of that, maybe bring one of these along with you and just use your regular gear.... Way back when I was working the no-shave level, on those (all too often) days when I was taking a beating, I'd lean over and quietly ask the catcher, "Hey, can I borrow your mitt?" He'd come back with, "Uh... OK... but why?" And I'd say (usually through clenched teeth): "Well YOU'RE not using it."

And this from a state association that (as has been reported) do not allow protests? WTH? I can see that three umpires could soon be thrown under the bus. Some reports (article comments in Atlanta Journal Constitution) have said that the crew had been scheduled to work the finals, but have been taken off it.

Tough to see where the ball hit (from 5:12 to 5:13 there's a big gap, it seems). What I don't see is U3 making a call of any kind, and by the time the camera gets back to home plate area, PU has already moved off the line. In the state where I work, the standard is that PU has the line "up to" the bag(s). From the front of the bag is the responsibility of U1 and U3 if it's 3-man or 4-man. I know that I've had other areas of the country have a different standard for this coverage.

Importance of pregame discussion of responsibility / coverage, as well as each man knowing his specific area of responsibility. I'm guessing that 4 man high school crews aren't the norm in most areas. That would make it especially important to have a thorough discussion of coverages. Edited to add: I don't see why the score has anything to do with the obvious "foul up" by the umpires.

From the OP: Grounder to 3B. Fair ball hits either F5's glove in front of the base or hits the base and bounces toward the 3B dugout. F5 chases it while R3 scores and U3 signals foul. From that, it's clear that it touched the ground, but what isn't clear is if foul was CALLED or just signaled.

Yep. Give 'em what they want. Personally, I couldn't give a rip what the game circumstances are, or how "well respected" someone allegedly is, or if they retired last night. You refuse to leave? Buh-bye. Apparently this coach who is so "well respected" doesn't know about the two way street that respect is. And if it's a playoff game, you'd think he'd be on his best behavior. I agree with @catsbackr, he must have wanted to go. Maybe in retirement he will have time to look at the rule book.....

Yikes, I don't have a computer screen that accurate or detailed. Remember the Little League USA final some years ago, the runner for Hawaii that missed 3B by what - an inch? That appeal was successful, and Hawaii was sent packing. Hard to believe that U3 could have missed seeing the touch.... or the miss. I don't think the video is conclusive, and besides, it's not as though they can use it in the protest. An article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution stated that the protesting team claims "inappropriate conduct" by the umpires "after the game". (which I assume means after they thought they had won). Weird way to introduce a protest, I think.

This was a three FOUR man crew, and U3 can be seen in 'D' in the video. According to the articles I've read, there was "a lengthy discussion" after the no-touch appeal was made. U3 and U2 (as reported) both confirmed the miss of 3B by R2. I don't think the video is conclusive either way. Could U3 have been wrong, or simply missed the touch? The video shows him standing rock solid until R2 is clearly beyond the bag. I hope that GHSA doesn't plan on viewing a video. What a can of worms that would open up. It's amazing that they are even going to hear the protest, since their own bylaws prohibit it. Even a 2 man crew should get this, under the circumstances in the situation.

The problem also comes with abuse of the individual's information. I routinely get broadcast emails from assignors who just can't resist the temptation to copy and paste email addresses and telephone numbers for their own uses.

Just noticed and viewed the video at the end. Needless to say it's tough to determine on my phone, but what about it....? U3 is right there. ... if the crew got together on the appeal and U3 confirms that R2 didn't touch the base, then by rule, it's over as the game was played out. What a mess. And in the after article comments, it was posted that the crew were taken off the Final? Is that really the case?

Understand what you're saying, @Gil, my reply was directed to the coach who, as you correctly attribute, in his attempt to throw a big Baloney Sandwich of a protest. Edited to add: I liked your summation in "Gil's Call". Hard to believe that the state is even considering the protest.

Actually, there is. ... each piece has a separate hologram with a specific number, though the one on the cage isn't legible. That's why the one number that I searched came up as "forehead portion". Also, the pads are red (Phillies), and none of the weld joints appear to be crimped. It may well be legit, but $850 to "Buy it Now'? Not me.

Here's the answer given: "There are holograms on the various pieces--mask, strap, pads etc. no idea why mlb did it so many times on this masks. The mask was worn by Ruiz and is a very light weight titanium one."

Note that the upper pad is labeled with an (alleged) hologram. (Consider that a hologram can be pulled off a $24 MLB ballcap and applied to anything that you want). Is this item legit as advertised? I don't know. But with an asking price of $850, let's just say I'm just a tad skeptical.
