I had this situation last year as well. The difference here is that it was the third game of the day, and the batters box was gone. The batter took a hack and missed. It was clear to me that his lead foot was out of the batters box. I told him that he needed to adjust because he was close to being out of the box. The next pitch he drove to right center and his lead foot was clearly out in front of the plate. I killed it immediately and called the batter out. The coach used the "what batters box" defense. I explained to him that it wasn't even close. Coach was not happy.

I would think that if you staggered you inside foot (toe to instep) like you should (at least that's how I have been taught), you would already be slightly angled making what BigSimonia mentioned nearly automatic.

Annual... Game Fees Question... Let's see who got a raise or not
tjthresh replied to TX-UIC's topic in High School
Last year, JV payed $55-$62.50. I had one freshman game that paid $60. I don't know what varsity pays. Football, I got $70 to $75 for varsity, and $45 to $50 for frosh and JV. -
Have any of you checked it out yet? It's still in beta, but it looks nice.

Is it the umpire's job to tell the offensive coach he has a choice, or is it on the coach to know?
-
I wear 450s. They are good shoes. I find you need a decent pair of socks with them. They tend to rub me raw around the third game.

Springfield is pretty far for me. Chicago, Detroit, Indy are possibilities. Anyone have any insight on camps/clinics in that area? Rich Fetchiet is one of the camp directors at the Doane Umpire Camp in Grand Rapids.

Damn. I would have thought that rule would have only applied if the player that is being maliciously contacted is commuting the obstruction, as in that case book case. Since we have two different infractions in the OP, I decided to enforce both. Hmmm
-
I say count it. The obstruction occurred before the MC , so the is going to be counted regardless. Looking forward to responses from the more experienced.

Hmmm. I'm not seeing where a call is involved under FED rules. Will embody help me out here.

Seems to me its both "grabbing the dirty end", and completely within the rules to eject in this case. Personally, I'm not grabbing. It's just not worth it. Sounds like that state association needs to make a rule with some teeth.

Agree with UIC. The coach is just coaching.

There are a few rules in the book that don't have any real consequence. I've been waiting for that one to pop up.

What's the hang up with long sleeves on the bases?
-
Damn. Why did I take my rule book home. I would have for the CI, but nor the balk. I'll have to remember to look this up at home.

That code didn't work, but WINTER15 does. $47.98 and free shipping.

What are you going to focus on for the upcoming year?
tjthresh replied to Umpire in Chief's topic in Free For All
I have to use a more consistent strike zone this year. The lead trainer from Sunday night went on for 20 minutes on how we need to be "strike" umpires. -
I have to agree with all you said. It doesn't make to much sense for an Umpire to be digging around the dugout. If someone is going to use an illegal bat they are not going to put it out until after the bat check anyway. If we are asking if they are "legally equipped" then we should be covered! Because of course we are memorizing every piece of equipment that we look at.

Must be a nice problem to have. It's quite possible that I could be running on one navy shirt and one pair of pants for the spring.

My partner and I will pick up each and every helmet and bat. With helmets, the big trouble spot is cracks on the ear flaps. You also need to make sure they have the NOSE stamp somewhere. I tossed quite a few helmets at the Fresh and JV levels last season. With bats, I run my hand over it checking for cracks and dents, look at the end cap, find the -3, and the certification stamp. On a side note, I take this time to glance at the players for jewelry as well.

EA Sports Active on my trusty PS3 is my workout of choice.

What night is "thieving evening"? Wow. Sometimes typing on my phone really sucks.

A gun toting baseball coach! That's got to be a one in a million situation.
