No. He had no gripe with us. The whole thing came out of nowhere. You see the score? Both teams were very lighthearted sort of playing out the innings. Then, out of nowhere, T3 tags up, forearms F1 backing up and yells out “stay out of my F’in way. And all hell broke loose. Both coaches were screaming. It was crazy. Coaches were actually apologetic and understood the rule and why we couldn’t continue.

Yup. I made it up🤣 I’m a wiz at video editing 🤣🤣 I would have to look at the ejection report, but F1 and R3 got 4, then someone who ran in from the RF pen reignited the fight, got 4 along with another Ulster guy who just started throwing haymakers in the second “round”.

I have written dozens rule tests over the years. I always have one or two people take the test before it is distributed. Why? Because, once in a while, what I want to say and how it is received are two different things. As a former instructional chairman for our umpire unit, I would have all ejection reports sent directly to me for review before forwarding it to the state office. The only reason is for clarity. I've received some reports, reread them a number of times and still couldn't figure out what the umpire was trying to say in his report. After reviewing a report, I would send it back to the umpire for his approval before forwarding it to the state office.

Yep, the collaborative group think can be really detrimental to getting anything done.

How did I miss this obvious retort? "Coach, you have more bags at first base than you have umpires. I can't watch all of them!"

We can quibble all we want on if either player committed MC… But this is the question I want answered. How did this game continue? There should have been about 40 ejections. With at least BR getting 4 games for fighting, and all the others ejected plus one game for “leaving the vicinity of the dugout, bullpen, or position on the field at the time of a potential altercation or fight. “ What am I missing?

By my count, 32 of the 79 associations recognized and blessed by TPTB dabble in baseball. (Ironically, the IHSA website is down at the moment, so I am working some back-room numbers on that.) Polyarchy (polygarchy?) and anarchy in Illinois -- so much closer to the truth than you realize. It's cultural though, not just high school sports. We have the highest number of governmental units out of all 50 states, and it isn't even close. We have around 7,000 governmental units (as high as 9,000 in one finding); Texas has around 5,000 - 5,500. As for why we would NOT allow the game to be played . . . I'll just stare at you stupidly until you go away. I did hear a rumor that navy may finally be going away (in 2 years) because "the guys in Chicago are refusing to wear it." 🙄 Everything around here has to be a damned pissing match or blame game; nobody can just man up and say either "I've made a decision: that's a dumb idea, and we aren't doing it" OR "I was wrong, let's not do that." Don't worry, Max. NFHS Publications will put out the "NFHS Guide to Safety Bases" pamphlet for us to buy for $10 next year.

Had a similar play this past weekend. 3 man, R2, R3 1 out, so U1 was inside. Fly ball down the RF line, clearly in foul territory and a chance to be caught at the fence, with the potential of the fielder going over. I couldn't completely vacate home and get as close to the wall as I would have liked, but got as much as I felt I could, saw the catch, U3 got the tag, and R3 scored without a play. Just one of those, have to trust your instincts and only take what the play gives you.

Great news, though! IHSA Softball is finally blessing the navy shirt . . . and . . . wait for it . . . Navy pants! They did not specify that umpires should not wear the navy shirt WITH navy pants.
