If you worked the Jayhawk JUCO Conference Jason you'd have gotten a free snazzy logo'd garment bag last year. Hahaha. I lay mine flat in back of my Superior Umpire Vehicle. (Tip of my hat to whomever came up with that explanation of the acronym.)

Sorry if I ruffled your feathers on the wrinkled pants comment. Us military vets can't stand wrinkled pants. It's an OCD affliction. To each his own. And, nobody probably notices anyway. Except us OCD types. Hahaha.

It's not just the military vets that hate creased uniforms and misaligned gig lines...

Mine has always been a tight fit. I put all of my clothes in the top, about 4 shirts, 2 pairs of pants, belt, socks, hats, undergarments. Put my brushes, indicators etc in the web pouches on the top. I put my base shoes in the side compartment and plate shoes in the bottom with my equipment. I fit my two CP's, shins, mask in the bottom with my plate shoes without much room to spare. It's a great bag and I use every bit of it. I don't like a separate bag for my shirts and pants because that was kind of the point of buying the big bag; being able to put everything in one bag.

As a vet myself, I cant stand wrinkled pants....But their is a difference between wrinkles and creases... i'm fortunate enough to fly to 5 if not a few more d1 weekends... when you fly you can't hang your pants. Fold them in 3 or 4 folds, then it is just a crease and not a wrinkle. I can see a guys pants and see a crease and be cool.. but wrinkles will bother me.

Try to switch... put your clothes on the bottom folded... and all your gear up top... the firmness of the bottom of the bag will provide a barrier for your clothes.

As a few others have pointed out, wrinkles are different from a little bit of a crease where your pants are folded over once to fit in your bag. I wouldn't ever wear wrinkled pants on the field, but no one is going to have a clue if your pants were driven to the field in your gear bag or hanging in the back of your SUV freshly pressed in a garment bag. I roll my shirts and put them in my bag and they look just as good as if they were on a hanger.

Some of you must be the guys who make seven trips back and forth from the locker room to the car.

My new bag showed up yesterday. Now I have to wait until Christmas to open it. I am hoping to put all of my gear and clothes in it. Just so I don't have to hang my clothes any more. We will see. As far as wrinkles go, I have seen more D1 umpires who wear uniforms out to the field that I would never consider wearing. But then again maybe they have made it where they want to. I am still climbing the ladder.

1. Hunter doesn't care bout wrinkles.

2. He uses plate pants on the bases.

I was glad to see him get rid of the dangling thread from his TW pads for the World Series though. That was a huge upgrade to his appearance.

I use the Ebags Motherlode as my gear bag. The only cloths I put in it are my undergarments. Those go in that front zippered compartment. When I'm working games where a dressing room is provided, I use a garment bag. Cloths always look great. They are easy to put into the garment bag. Plus it's very easy to hang the garment bag up in the dressing room. No fuss no muss. Otherwise when I'm using the parking lot dressing room, I hang my cloths on a rod in the back seat of my Durango. Let me add that I am not the guy that brings every shirt I own to every game. Four shirts max , black and powder, and two pants are the most I ever take. Plus two Majestic convertible jackets if the weather starts to cool. California cool.

4 shirts for 1 game?... what are you worried about?...

I only pack according to my schedule..in the early spring, I know 100% we are not wearing powder blue, so there is no need to pack that one.

In the spring i will pack 1 black, 1 powder. I also look at the weather, so i might need 2 types of jackets.. light pullover and a heavy jacket.

California cool, eh?   :cool2:  :cool2:

I carry only the shirt I need for the game. There are some here who only have a navy shirt (I know...can you believe it), but I carry my black anyway. If we have arranged to wear something else, I will take that one. I always have a light jacket and a Majestic. I always have a pair of plate pants and base pants.

The wrinkles on Hunter's pants look like the wrinkles you get when you put your hands on your knees a lot. My base pants have that on the knees. They don't come out even if you iron them.

I sure hope some of you umpire as good as you look.

This isn't just directed to you, but to everyone...Why do you need to pack 4 shirts? I understand 4+ game tournaments, but if you're working a DH, do you really need 4 shirts? Can't you contact your partner in advance and determine what the flavor of the day will be and only pack what you need? I know I only work at the college level, but even at the HS level and lower someone needs to be the crew chief. Contact your partner in advance (at the college level the CC does this on Monday for a weekend series) and decide what you're going to wear and all the other particulars.

I've beat this dead horse before, but also, why do you need to pack 2 chest protectors? Or 2 of anything besides ball bags??? I just don't get it. If you feel the need to have "back up" equipment with you, why not just put it in a duffle bag and keep it in your trunk?

You're still climbing the ladder and having figured out yet that only you and your partner really care about a wrinkle in your shirt or a fold in your pants. Yes, we want to look professional, but if a college coach says our stuff is wrinkled after driving or flying with our gear packed, they will be promptly told to provide us with an iron and ironing board. Most D-1's provide laundry service for the weekend. If our clothes come back from them wrinkled, it's on them.

As I wrote earlier...No one will remember that your pants had wrinkles, but they are going to remember the calls you miss.

Guys, let's all understand we're talking about our pants or jerseys having fold lines in them where whey been folded in our bags. We're not talking a wrinkled up mess that looks like they've sat in the bottom of a gear back for 3 weeks, pulled out, shook out and thrown on. I appreciate you wanting to have professional looking creased/starched pants, but my pants that have been in my gear bag for 6-7 hours (or longer) aren't going to look any worse than yours if you've hung them in your car or garment bag. I've had guys put their stuff in a garment bag, fall off the hanger and get completely wrinkled up in the bottom of the bag.

Something I say all the time, if you think that anyone focuses on you, the next time a batter is out by 30 feet at 1st base for the 3rd out, don't make a call and watch what happens. The defense will leave the field, the offense will take the field and the game will move on. Or, ask the coaches at the plate meeting during the 2nd game of a DH what color uniforms you wore during the last game. Unless they're OCD, they aren't going to remember.

I agree with what you are saying. I don't think the coaches care unless we look like we slept in our clothes the night before. But it's not them I have to worry about. It is the Evaluator in the stands watching my game. My first year doing High School Varsity Baseball, in my first game I had an evaluator at the game. His first comment to me after the game was that my pants didn't have a noticeable crease in them. I asked him what that meant(I could see the crease). He said from the stands my crease should stand out. I just said ok. But from that point on I decided I would never let that happen again. Especially since he gave me a 1 for my uniform that day. But that's what we have to deal with when we are moving up the ladder in High School or junior College baseball.

California. Land of unreasonable asshole umpire evaluators! Ridiculous.

Actually the competition at the college umpire level in our area is pretty intense with some very good umpires. First impressions are lasting impressions. But a one?

Please tell your little ole High school evaluator to contact me...and i will fix him... at the high school level most of those guys dont really know what they are looking for. Case in point. My varsity football crew go evaluated and the guy gave us a average on uniform...but all of our stuff was clean and looked great... stupid ass high school people.

Just a small thing I'm pulling out here, but for me I carry multiple shirts because I only have one assignor for my league and most of the time she's too busy to tell me who my partners are. Occasionally when I know who my partner is we'll co-ordinate in advance.

Also, I end up carrying multiple shirts because I seem to be in between sizes. Wearing a L on the bases is like a garbage bag, but I can't fit in a medium behind the dish. So I carry both sizes in navy, black, and powder.

My two cents :)

MidAMUmp is probably right. Most if not all coaches and players will never notice if your shoes are shined, your pants are pressed, your jersey is not wrinkled.

BUT more people than you think will notice if you are poorly dressed or look disheveled.

I ALWAYS look parade ground ready when I walk onto a field, 8u or D1.

If I am doing more than one game that day I generally change shoes OR polish mine before I go to my next game. I NEVER walk on a field for game #1 without a quick shave from my electric razor if I have any shadow.

That’s just me, FOR ME. I FEEL better that way with more confidence.

I hammer our young guys on appearance and I am up their asses if they show up less than perfect.

I am sponsoring one of our 4 year guys to pro school this year. He was selected the rookie of the year in one of the best associations in metro Atlanta and always looks great.
