How would you handle these three situations

Two are games I was playing in and the last is a game next to mine a partner was working in... I just want to learn from what I've seen.

Situation #1

The first one was 8th graders playing in a rainy muddy crappy game between 2 rivals (home team 2nd place - away team 3rd place)... The game was tied 7-7 going into the top of the 7th (last inning)... The Away team put up a huge inning, doubling their score and making it 14-7. The Home team then came up and got an equally great inning, somehow scoring 7 runs in responce. With the winning run on 3rd and 2 outs, I was batting. A pitch went into the dirt and skipped off the catcher. The runner on 3rd headed home and I backed up, out of the batters box. The throw came to the pitcher just after he slid in home. The umpire (on a bad angle - screened by the pitcher), called him out even though it was very obvious he was safe from my angle.... Here is where the questions come up.... The runner has quite a temper, exclaimed "WHAT!?!?" and proceeded to launch himself feet first at the backstop, causing a rack of bats to fall off. My coach went off on a rant, cussing like a sailor to the ump at an extremely loud voice... The entire time, the only person who was ejected was a spectator who gave the middle finger to the ump, and he refused to leave... The entire time, the ump continuously threatened to forfeit the game, which no one was taking seriously.... Also going on the entire time, 2 or 3 members of the home team (myself included) as well as all of the away team was pleading with the coach, players, and fans acting up to knock it off and play ball........ If you are curious, the away team won the game in the 8th by a final score of something like 20-19.

Situation #2

This one was high schoolers (9th and 10th graders) playing a hot summer evening game. The away team was 2nd place, the home team was 9th.... The home team was winning 4-3 in the top of the 7th (last inning)... The away team had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs. The home team chose to intentionally walk the next batter, and after the fourth pitch, the batter threw his bat 20-25 feet and it smashed against the dogout fence. Throwing the bat is supposed to be an automatic out and ejection in our league... After throwing it, the batter-runner immediately began apologizing to the ump, saying it was an accident (which it was)... The ump decided to give the away team a stern warning and allow the batter-runner to take his base.... If you are curious, the next batter singled in two runs, the away team held them in the bottom of the 7th, and the away team won.

Situation #3

This was a game I heard about second hand. It was a t-ball game with 5 year olds playing... When a 3rd out is recorded, the league has the runners all run home just to promote exercise or whatever. The kid hit the ball and it was actually caught by the catcher (rarely happens)... There was a runner on first at the time, and the 1st baseman screams at the kid "You gotta go to the other base!!!" and proceeds to half punch half slap the runner in the shoulder... The umpire saw this, and immidiately told the coach, "Coach, your 1st baseman is gone." The coach had seen it too, and didn't even argue, and proceeded to let the kid know what he did and why he couldn't play. The kid handled it well, and understood he shouldn't have punched the other player. He even went over and apologized to the player at the coach's request... When the mom found out though, she went ballistic, screaming and cussing at the umpire, insulting her and everything... The ump ejected her too.

Just for display...

The first ump was a 50-55 year old man

The second ump was 30-35 year old man

The last ump was a 15 year old girl

How should I handle these if they were to come up in my own game?

Sit 1: Ejection to the coach and runner

Sit 2: Warning is fine, depending on how strongly the rule is written

Sit 3: It's 5-year-old t-ballers. Really?

Never eject a fan.

Never forfeit a game. Suspend the game and let park management handle it.

I have no comment on a t-ball game.

First, remember where he was and try not to get locked like he was. Second, dump the kid as soon as he loses it, especially at that age. Third, dump the coach on the first foul language. Clear away from the chaos, as best as possible. Go to the asst, now manager, and tell him to get rid of them or the game is done. If he doesn't then suspend and leave, DO NOT FORFEIT, not with-in your rights in most leagues.

You said the umpire repeatly threatened to forfeit and nobody paid any atttention. As an umpire you can't threaten, you have to back up what you say. I assure you if he told them to settle and he started leaving then things would have settled in a hurry. Don't go out there throwing everybody in site but don't threaten ejection and not follow through if he doesn't comply.

I would definitely warm unless you felt he threw it because he was nad about being walked.

First, kids aren't too bright sometimes. The F3 probably should have wacked the runner but I would probably just talk to him and make him understand it isn't a good idea to hit other players. However, nce tossed the parent has ABSOLUTELY no business getting in a 15 yr old girl's face. In the least she needs to be brought before the BOD of the league. Depending on the severity the teenager could have a legal action against her, some type of assault. Some guys say stay away from T ball but if they are assinging umpires to it, work it. It will get you some game management skills.

This is what I had been thinking, just looking around the site (especially the don't forfeit thing - I've seen that quite a few times)...

The next game I umpired was the one with the same mom, and we were advised by the league to have 3 umpires (for a t-ball game, very unnessasary), as well as the league supervisor on scene the entire game... She kept to herself far down the foul line though, so we were all good.

I would hope the league supervisor would have been enough. I don't see how an extra two umpires would have made a difference.

Three umpires for a T ball game? :question1: :crybaby2: :tantrum: :hopmad: :big_no What they needed to do was increase BOD coverage not the umpires. Technically the umpires have nothing outside the fences which is where the problem is.

So coaches don't argue over safe/outs. I have seen some pretty psychotic coaches in T Ball and pitching machine leagues.

Haha, exactly what I thought.... The entire time, it was so RIDICULOUS... I was 13 at the time and it was only my 2nd game. I wasn't exactly ready to stand up to the league and tell them it was unnessassary...

Umpired my way through college 91-96. Worst leagues to call-- T-Ball and anything women's softball. Women will argue with you when they know you're right.

When my oldest son played pitching machine it was all fun and instruction except for one guy. He put a batting cage at his house and would take his team there before every game. When his son went to kid pitch at 7/8 he got caught loading bats. When his son moved to LL he didn't like the league, not enough talent, so he scouted other leagues and built a house so he was in that district.

This is why you have to have umpires where it should just be coaches.
