Not sure what it is, but the pitcher's body language doesn't look right after the pitch. Kinda looks like a "What are you gonna do about it posture."

So all F3 has to do is lie on first base and voila - no one can ever get past first base because they can't touch it. And once F3 gets the ball it's no longer obstruction so just tag the sucker or appeal the miss. Brilliant! LOL-- I'm gonna start teaching this 12U.

For clarification, the runner was attempting to touch 1st. The collision caused him to step over first. Saw this play happen last night so it does happen from time to time.

2 Situations, looking for input. (OBR Please) 1. Batter hits ball to fence and is looking for a double. F3 stands on TOP of 1st base and obstructs the runner. DDB obstruction is signaled. Runner, because of the obstruction misses first and continues to 2nd where he is safe without a play. Question: Does the runner still have to touch 1st base if in the mind of the umpire, the miss was caused by the obstruction? -- 1st base can be a little different by rule. 2. Similar situation but occurs at 2nd instead of 1st. (miss 2nd due to obstruction) Same question. The umpire shall then call “Time†and impose such penalties, if any, as in his judgment will nullify the act of obstruction.

Tough to be an umpire. If he doesn't call that, the other manager is out.

Yep, I agree that it looks awkward. The thing that really seems strange to me is watching an MLB game and the catcher will tuck his free hand and the umpire will leave both exposed. It just perplexes me why looks override safety. I could see the point if it had an negative influence on the umpire's ability to see but the best I can tell, it's all about how the umpire looks.

Just curious why so many umpires leave their arms and hands exposed. As a former catcher, I always tuck my arms behind me. Sometimes it looks like I am skiing but so what? Some of these guys are throwing 95+, why would you leave a hand exposed when you could literally lose it on a foul ball?

No discussion at all from anyone. He must'a had something else in addition. I was too far down the line to hear what he said. Would BI with the catcher send a runner back to 2nd in this situation? Seems like that would call for a 2nd out instead of a return of the runner.

This was minor league ball. I belive AAA. I must have missed something else that transpired.

Okay, I read your post to say that his fans were complimenting you and thought you did a good job of managing the situation. I've found that when the parents are against the coach, he must be a real jackass. For me, he'd have a very short leash. Dump him once and let him take the walk of shame.

Hey guys, I was watching a Minor League - Southern League game (Tennessee Smokies vs Montgomery Biscuits) on Sat and saw a strange play. R1, R2 0 outs. Strike 3 to batter is dropped and BR takes off for first. R2 heads for third. Umpire jumps out from behind home plate and kills the play. Calls BR out on strikes and sends R2 back to second. Was very authoritative. No one said a word. My question: Is it appropriate to kill this to avoid the train wreck? Did I miss something like interference on the BR?

Spoke with coworker again. Apparently, the game was about to begin. Pitcher on rubber when "time" was called. 1. Parent pulls kid 2. Coach B goes to talk to umpire 3. Tournament director enters field 4. Coach A "asked" to join the conversation. 4. Umpire to Coach A "Come Clean" 5. Coach comes clean 6. Tournament director declares the forfeit and bans A from further tournament play. Perhaps the umpire should have kept quite; however, he was probably pizzed off at the situation. Ultimately, the tournament director was the one calling the shots though. I also found out that it was indeed high school freshmen that were attempting to play on the middle school team. Point of the post was more of a "You aint gonna believe this" post and not a rules post. Good discussion on proper umpire "mechanics" though. Perhaps I should have placed it in the Free For All forum.

Overheard a pitching instructor in private lessons tell his pupil "if you are never called for a balk on this move then you aren't doing it right."

Third hand info so I am not 100% sure of the exact events. I know that the tournament director was involved. I know that this ocurred at game time. (Teams were on the field ready for first pitch) I assume that the umpire was involved simply because of the proximity to game time. Also, if the coach turned in a fradulent lineup, I'd assume that the umpire would have a stake in that.

Wow, This was relayed to me from a coworker. Team A is 4 games into a TSSAA middle school tourney when suddenly 2 new players show up. They are listed on the roster that was turned in before the tournmament began but clearly hadn't played in any of the previous games. (Crips White Uniforms, obviously older, not recognized as playing previously.) Team B complains before the game starts that the kids are not on the team and are too old but no proof is offered up so they are allowed to participate. Just before game begins, Team A has a parent pull his child off of the field and states in a loud voice "My child will not be a part of this, we don't know who those 2 kids are and they have never played with us." Umpire calls coaches together again and demands that coach A come clean. Coach A lowers head in embarrassment and comes clean. Umpire "Ball-Game." Team A's parents leave apologizing to everyone that will listen. I'm mad just thinking about it. Win at all cost I guess. Coworkers guess was that the 2 kids were highschool players that were called after game 3 when pitching limits were exausted.

$100.00 -- Was ready to put it up but apparently the tournament director doesn't know that rule either. Guess you win some and lose some. :smachhead:
