Phillies Obstruction Intereferance

Ok to anyone who was watching the phils 2nite you probably seen the obstruction call. For anyone who was not watching them here is the situation. Victorino was in the middle of a rundown. The fielder throws the ball, as he throws it Victorino turns around and lightly leans his shoulder into the fielder, who looked to be in his way. There was no MC, the 1st base ump called obstruction. What do you think? Personally because there was no MC I feel it should be obstruction, then again I am a Phillies fan .

I heard the play on radio and saw the play replayed on TV, the Met announcers thought Victorino purposely ran into Reyes, hence no obstruction. It's funny, I am a Met fan but now as a rookie umpire I have a greater empathy for my brother in blue. In this case the umpire could not judge if Victorino intended to interfere with Reyes, so although it resulted in the ejection of the Met manager, I believe it was the correct call...still a happy ending for me as my Metropolitans are only a 1/2 out of first place...Let's Go Mets! :-)

It was a tough call and I'm glad I didn't have to make it, but I think the umpire got it right and that's the way I would have probably went.

Where in the definition of OBS does it state that there has to be malicious contact, or even contact at all. It say "impedes" the progress of the runner.

Impedes - –verb (used with object), -ped⋅ed, -ped⋅ing. to retard in movement or progress by means of obstacles or hindrances; obstruct; hinder.

fielders without the ball standing in the way may be judged as impeding a runner.

You are exactly right. As pointed out there is no malicious contact in pro baseball but there certainly is obstruction. You usually think contact in a rundown because it makes it a no brainer but it isn't required.

I'm not sure what Wilke was looking at but I think that a no-call and let it play out. IMO.

YOU KNOW that in a weeks time someone on this board is going to have the same stich because some kid get it in his mind that its ok to make contact in a rundown like that.

Players are taught to find someone to run into on a rundown. Victorino left his basepath and leaned his shoulder into the fielder. I've got a "nice-try-no-call"

I recorded the game and just watched the play. Victorino went into Reyes and got the call. He is a sneaky little bastard, It reminded me of how he got himself hit with a thrown ball in the WBC. As an ump you have to call what you see. The replay sure had a good angle but he didn't have that advantage.

Yeah it's you.

However, you give a lot of coaches the same situation and they are gonna melt down on you whether their LL guys or Earl Weaver, it's part of their job, just as it's part of my job to explain the call, and then send him home when he self destructs.
