Are baseball batting gloves part of the uniform or equipment?

Question

Posted

Quick rules question that came up during a recent discussion.

When it comes to baseball batting gloves, are they officially treated as part of the player’s uniform, or are they considered separate equipment?

I’ve seen situations where things like loose gear or accessories can affect rulings (HBP, interference, detached equipment, etc.), so it made me wonder where batting gloves actually fall in that classification.

For example:

If a ball contacts batting gloves that are being worn or tucked in a pocket, does that get treated the same as hitting the body?

Are there any restrictions on how they’re worn (loose, hanging out, etc.)?

Does NFHS handle this any differently compared to OBR or NCAA?

I’m curious how others interpret this and if there’s any clear rule reference that defines it.

NFHS if it hits something in your back pocket it's a HBP, I was looking at prior tests and I think that exact scenario was on the 2025 test but someone with more than one year of working NFHS rules can correct me

If a BATTING GLOVE is in the batter's back pocket...and the glove only is HBP, is the batter legally and properly equipped? Asking for a friend...

Why not? There have been instances where my son at the last moment was called to pinch hit/sub in for another player and literally had no time to put his gloves on. Grab his bat, grab his helmet and go--no time (or mental wherewithal due to largely artificial time constraints) to get his gloves out of his pocket or his oven mitt out of his bag. His coach would have lit into him for taking too much time had he done so.

Perhaps more likely is a pitched ball hitting a protruding sliding mitt--but the same holds true:  HBP. I want to say there's an NFHS case play for it (don't have my book with me at the moment to verify).

Does the batting gloves have a NOCSAE or BBCOR stamped on it? I am taking this as tongue in cheek question, sort of like 'if a woodchuck could chuck wood, would a ....

BTW, wouldn't you think a catcher's cup would be NOCSAE stamped?

Thanks.

BTW, the case play writers apparently have no idea of how long sliding gloves are.

NFHS rule 1-4-4 states:  "The school's official uniform (including uniform pants, jersey, visible undergarmets, socks, stockings, caps and headwear)....." does not mention batting gloves.  Therefore, I would say it's safe to conclude that batting gloves would be classified as equipment.

And unless it says “Pocket Stuffing Glove” on the package, I am holding firm to it is NOT being worn properly and I refuse to reward that.  Yes, YOU set that precedent, NFHS.

When did that case play get changed to say “sliding glove”?  It used to say “batting glove” and I’m 99% certain NFHS drove home the point of “don’t let a batter keep a sliding mitt in his pocket.”  For a while it was one of those self-inflicted contradictions.

Separately but tangentially, we have MLB precedent of them being tagged for an out. Marcus Semien with the Rangers Oct 2023. https://www.mlb.com/news/marcus-semien-tagged-out-batting-gloves-alcs-game-4

Only in the game of baseball could batting gloves in the back pocket mean one thing in one situation...and mean something else in another situation...

Can you imagine talking with a coach where the sequence is HBP in the batting glove in the back pocket with a base award...followed by the same player getting picked off at 1B before the next pitch of the game on a tag to the same batting glove in the same back pocket..."Coach, we got it correct. Yes, the two plays look very similar. No, they are not the same. No, I will not go to my partner on that."
