Situation: 15-18 recreational league, the pitcher was overpowering the catcher. The catcher missed a fastball thrown somewhere in the 70-75mph range. It was an inside fastball that hit me on the outside of my forearm.

Any suggestions for this situation?

Ice.

As soon as you can apply it. I got hit in the hand last night. I asked a coach for an ice pack between innings and then kept applying it between innings for the rest of the game about another 1.5 hours. While I have a stitch mark on my hand and it is sensitive to the touch, the swelling at this point is minimal.

Same thing the other night....catcher fanned at the pitch...I held my stance and it hit me square in the cup...after the initial thud and the sound of the air coming out of me...Both coaches came running over......I then leaned in on the catcher after I caught me breath and asked him to never do that again. He then turned to me and said.....is everything going to be a ball now? and we both chuckled.

I took one in the indicator the other night. Not sure how since I put my hand behind my knee. Broke the indicatior, nothing to my hand. That game I also took one in the side of the neck after it ricocheted off the batter and one in the bottom of my jaw after it skipped off the catcher's shoulder. Yes I wear a 6 inch throat guard. I'm thinking of switching to a helmet, but I cannot find any that fit my head.

If the catcher is just absolutely horrible....haven't had that in a while then you can ask the coach to replace him. 901©???? Have never had to do this, however. Also, I will start hiding behind the catcher which makes the pitcher's strike zone suffer somewhat (low and away).:agasp_:

I quietly asked the coach to replace the catcher after the end of the 2nd inning. He did so for the 3rd through 5th innings, but decided to bring the same catcher back in, for the 6th inning (which happened to be the last inning due to time restrictions.)

My arm still hurts like hell but what can ya do? Ah well.

Normally you can tell what type of F2 you have when watching F1 warm-up

My suggestion: Use F2 as a shield. Do not stay in the slot. Stand like the PU's in the "old" days used to meaning right behind F2. If F2 moves then move with him.

Yes this will most likely cause you to have an inconsistent zone for this F1 but so be it. Self preservation comes first and Most of us have to work the next day. If the coach complains then tell him to put someone in who can catch.

Side Note: Be careful about these 15-18 yr. old rec-leagues. From my experience not very talented. Normally the talented kids at this age group are playing Legion ball or select travel ball and the Rec-leagues get the remainder.

I was working a semifinal game at CDP about 6 years ago behind the plate. Took a foul ball off the inside of my right elbow (I work the davis stance). Put ice on it every half inning. The bruise didnt go away for almost two months.

I still have nightmares. LOL

O my suggestion I have learned from a legend when a catcher cant catch it I put my arms behind my back to protect my arms because I HAVE a real job and I cannot afford to miss work because of a broken arm. I strongly suggest staying in the slot.

I also have the same experience....

The ball hit me between my shoulder and my arm pit.... although i ware CP but it still hit

the sweet spot. When hit i tell the catcher to trow the ball back to pitcher and i call " TIME..UMPIRE DOWN.." THEN i put ice on it.

I agree with BALK HATER...i also put my arms behind my back.:clap::clap:B)

I started out the season putting my arms in front of me. Then I came to be about three weeks away from the first of two very important summer events where I could not afford a broken/fractured arm. I have started to put my arms behind me until both events have passed.

Rainer,

I have had the same issue on masks/helmets and opted for the Easton Stealth XL catcher mask with the 6 inch Wilson throat protector. Hat size is 7 7/8ths and works well. I got clipped three times last week, forearm twice and bicep once. Two catchers, same team.

The answer, ICE. I do like the old school approach though of hands on catchers backs, cause if that happens again, grab them and use them as a shield...

The only issue of "hiding" behind a catcher is your wings forearms and elbows are exposed. Just have to be careful there. When 80s+, ie overpowering a catcher, I just tell the catcher you better not miss any and get lazy or it will get ugly fast. Most good ones understand.

Sheesh! And you say that I'm dead to you... ?:clap: hee heee.... Heck, if you're going to do that, you may as well use them as a plate brush, too.

LOL

and here I thought you were going to call me globe head.... I usually give catchers part of my game fee if they are good, and oh for the record, what plate brush? only shoes LOL

I have a state championship game tomorrow for 12U and now because of you, I will wear a ball bag on the bases AND a watch...

Just tell your family, you are moving to FL for the summer to work on your tanlines

And as long as we're into uniform parts, don't forget the gray slacks purchased on sale at Sears, and of course, the black work boots. :agasp_:
