Question

When does a half swing/check swing become a strike? I've seen a couple of different answers & am curious. Is it when the barrel head clears the front hip or front of the plate or crosses the foul line?

I believe, that in high school softball, leaving the bat over the plate without making an attempt to hit the ball is a strike regardless of the pitch location.

NFHS, yes.

USA Softball, no.  They say leaving the bat out there is not a strike as long as the bat does not move towards the ball.

Another version:

”Coach, where did the bat start?”

Coach: ”On her shoulder.”

Me: ”And it went … “

Coach: ”Over the plate.”

Me: “Towards the ball.”

The counter argument is "My player started in the bunt position".

Which, I'm sure you've seen more times than you can count, is ridiculously common in softball - everyone knows they're gonna bunt so the batter is squared to bunt while the pitcher is still taking signs.

Only if the pitch is in the strike zone.

I had a JV coach lose his mind when I didn't call a strike when the opposing batter didn't pull his bat back when the ball was out of the zone.
